My son says that the anti-freeze currently in my car
(unknown brand/unknown age ... the anti-freeze not the
Fiero!) is good for -23 degrees.

Should I drain some of it out and then top it up with new
anti-freeze to boost it up to -40 degrees, or should I
get the whole cooling system flushed out and then fill it
up with new anti-freeze? What is a good brand for the
Fiero?

BTW: Congratulations Dave on the birth of your second
baby girl. Joanne can hardly wait to see her. I guess
that the days of family trips in a two seater Fiero are
gone now!!!!

Cheers

You really should flush your cooling system every 4 or 5 years.   But how often does it get to -40 here?

If you are unsure of the age of your coolant, then you should flush it.   However, if it is fairly new, I would just make sure it didn't have oil in it and looked fairly clean and just top it up if required.

Just be thankful you don't need to put Dexcool in it.

Thank You Shakey Dave.   We can still take 2 Fiero's one kid in each. Although I might need the trailer for the larger stroller and all the related stuff for 2 kids.

As to the antifreeze its best to keep it to around the -20 area, as we don't get that cold. Having too much antifreeze can actually reduce the cooling ability of the car. I usually recommend people run 25% pure antifreeze and 75% distilled water.   If your cooling system was filled less than 3 years ago, you should be fine.
