Probably a Toronado, possibly 1966. Other custom Toronados can be seen Here. Beautiful cars... back when GM stylists still knew what they were doing.

Yes, the Toronado was made by Oldsmobile. And yes, the 67X was based on a Toronado platform, but the car pictured in the first post is not a 67X. I'm old enough to remember when Esso Oil was giving away four of these highly customized cars as prizes commemorating Canada's Centennial in 1967. I was eleven years old and I was really hoping my mom and dad would win one of these fabulous cars. More info and lots of pictures can be found Here and Here.

The stylists may have known what they were doing, but the engineers sure as hell didn't. "Guys, I have a great idea. You know how awesome V8, RWD muscle cars are? Why don't we make some FWD, it can't fail!" |

Well, the Toronado was never marketed as a "muscle car". It was a luxury cruiser with lots of power. Front wheel drive eliminated the driveline tunnel through the passenger compartment which made for more interior openness and foot room. Same idea for the Cadillac Eldorado. |

Here's some videos about Jay Leno and his customized RWD '66 Toronado. Yes, rear wheel drive! It's quite a beast with over 1000 ponies! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSiOLr6Kyds http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/video/1966-oldsmobile-toronado /182147/ http://www.drivingtelevision.tv/?cid=269 http://tlc.discovery.com/videos/rides-biggest-spenders-custo m-made-toronado.html Who says money can't buy happiness?

I've never said that money can't buy happiness. Hell, I dream of the day where I can afford to wedge a jet turbine in to a bike, just because.
