    Posted: 17 August 2010 at 8:22pm

I need to know how many people are for sure planning on attending the Dyno Day next month.

I am shopping for Dyno shops right now and frankly had no idea we had 5 different shops with Dyne’s in the Surey Coquitlam area.  I was equally surprised to find out that Kinetic Motorsports had sold off their dyno and no longer Dyno cars.  They do stuff like Brakes, Oil Changes and other things now.

The Date will be Sept 25th.

It’s hard for me to go to a Dyno shop and work out a price or even reserve spot without know what I am ordering for.

We are looking at $100 per car for 3 pulls.  (They test your car 3 times just in case you get a fluke low number or something.

I also need to know from the members what they want.

AFR Reading  (Tells you if your car is running rich, or running lean)

Due to the lower number of people with Wideband tuning that has been taken off the menue, unless you wish to pay extra.

Tuning Time in General.

The Best prices are if you just want “power pulls”  which means you set your car up, then bring it to them and they will tell you what you get.

Do we want to pony up the big bugs and just rent the Dyno for the Day, roughly $700  which means at least getting 7 people with cash up front.  If we end up with 10 people, the price drops to 70 bucks a person and frankly I’ll bet we can get an extra pull in each and some tuning time.

Let me know what you want to see done and I’ll work with it.

I spoke to Jawanda Motorsports, Mopac and Resnicks.  So far Resnicks have the best price.  3 pulls for $100 the rest were as bad as 2 pulls for $150 which was Mopac. I was recommended a 4th option which I am going to contact tomorrow.

IF you know of a Dyno shop with good prices.  Please feel free to speak up.

David

Hmm... No shops, but I'm really hoping to convince my boss to be a nice guy and spot me the cash.

I won't be attending now as I am in the BC Corvette autocross this day, asked and they have put me down as attending.

Now a few days before if the weather is looking really bad, I'll choose for the dyno...the registration is same as PCA where you do not have to register online, just show up with cash.

Cheers...

Well at this point, from the deafening silence, I am not sure if I should even be putting any more time into this entire project, never mind the 1/2 dozen shops I have spoke to and quizzed them about what you get for your money.

Maybe at a later date?   I would be curious to see what my car puts out but it won't happen til i get my clutch issues sorted.   Those eBay clutches that David mentioned are looking tempting!

Yes, hopefully it isn't pushed too far away, I need a dyno of the current 2.8L before I do the new 2.8L later.

I do want in on a dyno day. I just didn't want
to commit to anything since my car is still not
ready for it.
But I am all for a later date.

Alright then, this is progress.

Lets start a list of things that should be done to make it a happy Dyno Day.

Stuff to you car.

500kms before said day.

New Plugs, Wires, Rotor and Cap.  MSD parts if at all possible

Gap said plugs correctly and torqued correctly.

Put on a new ground strap to the motor

New and I stress this NEW fuel filter.  Even a few month old filter can rob power in the upper RPM band.

Get started now on what gas your car likes and start tuning for it.

Air Filters Removed,

V6 Air Divert mod made for the PCV Pipe.  Probably one of the singlest cheap mods I have done to my car to increase gas mileage and throttle response.  Note on the Sea to Sky run, I filled up out in Surrey, and have 350kms of spirited driving on the car and still have plenty of fuel to spare.  I have not yet put more gas in it after the entire run.

1 bottle of Engine Restore MUST BE DONE 500kms before hand.  This will help an older engine give a nice boost to an newer engine.

There are a ton of other mods, but those are the simple 20 min mods.

We will push it back later in the season.

Brian when does your insurance run out.

Tristan how soon will you be ready to do the engine swap? So we can get it done before hand.

Now as to costs.

Plugs Wires Cap and Rotor plan on $150

PCV Bypass $24 bucks

Can of Engine Restorer $20

Drop one grade in oil unless already at 5w30

Under drive Crank/Alternator Pully if you so wish $79 for the 2 pulley set from ASP.

Now extra costs for those that don't drive there cars daily.

$35 Day Permit or Trailer it to the Dyno

$40 for one tank of decent pump gas.

Air up rear tires to reduce rolling resistance on the dyno.

Completely unhook the EGR System. Even though it is not active at WOT will be good to keep intakes as cool as possible.

Maybe drop to a 180 Thermostat.

All these little things add up to better performance and gas mileage.  Yes these 2 are not always opposites.  Just look at the new Corvettes 400hp and 30mpg on the highway.   Also lighter wheels will add in a rear wheel hp test.   This test measures Wheel Horsepower how much power you are getting at the ground, and trust me wheel choice can make a huge difference on how much power you get to the ground.

So skim through those numbers and prices above and take into consideration your total cost to get your car in tip top shape for a dyno day.  Heck I might even do 2 passes with the motor just normal and on the 3rd pull, give it some bottle fed juice.

Any reduction in rotating mass will help put more RWHP down, as it helps cut parasitic losses. Manual transmissions will also fair slightly better as they don't suffer torque convertor slippage.

As for me, I'm focused on my safety mods for now, but that being said, I should have that swap done in about 8-12 months time, so I can handle it being pushed back a few months, just not being pushed back another year, if possible.

Which ever is the lighter combo is your better bet.  The dyno measures wheel speed / RPM so its not how fast you can spin it, but how quickly you can accelerate it.

Can I get some input from some other people as to when they would actually do a dyno day.

Dr. Fiero, how is Hugh's car coming, when do you think it will be ready for some Dyno time.  I know he is going to want a considerable amount of time, so maybe rent the dyno for the full day, do the club stuff early on, then let Hugh play in the afternoon.  I know a lot of people will be interested in seeing his numbers.  I think it will be near the highest of any street driven Fiero in the world.

There is a guy in my class at school who owns his own performance shop with a 4 wheel dyno. I havn't spoken to him yet but I will look into it and see what his place is like. Mostly imports and that sort of stuff though apparently he is starting to look into more domestic stuff.

Sorry I guess this was the only place I did not update the info on.  The dyno day has been canceled until further notice due to lack of people willing to commit and or are simply not ready.

Which is dumb. Maybe we should co-ordinate with some other car clubs around town?
