Hey everyone,
There are 2 more street legal drag races this season, and I finally plan on going this Friday. It would be sweet if others could come out as well, just for fun and see what your cars can do or just spectate. full rules here That's this Friday the 5th at mission raceway park. The last even will be next week on the 12th. I will be heading there right after work so should get there around 5ish. Anyone else want to come? |

If this was in the spring when I had my V8 I would be all over it, with my 88 running on 5 and a half cylinders I would be lucky to pull off a low 16 which would not be a great showing for Fiero's. Here is from one of my more Favorite West Coast Fiero's Mission Track Day event. Side note, that car that has the Nitrous Backfire and coasts the last bit of the track, that is the motor that I just put in my 88GT. So no wonder its not exactly running right. http://captfiero.com/videos/Legal%20Fiero%20Drag%20Racing/mi ssionvids.wmv There are other videos at www.captfiero.com/videos then go to legal Fiero drag racing
For those of you that have never done it, you have to give it a shot. You are being timed, but thats not the point, you pic a buddy you want to run with, and as you get to the gates to line up, you let the stagging guys know that you want to run him and they line you up, you get to run WIDE OPEN against the person. Few Side Notes for people that have never done it, make sure you see where the staging lights are. You need to get your front tires in between the beams to start the staging lights. If you are newbie, get up there and stage first, it gives you a few more seconds to prepare while your opponent gets into the beams. If you are running on all season or even performance street tires, drive Around the water box, as the water will get inside the tread of the tires and even a light burnout will not get rid of it all, leaving you spinning for the first 60ft of the track. Go around the water box keep your tires dry and do the best burnout you can to clean off all the sand and dirt from your tires. If you do it right, you will get the launch of your life. Next up, the biggest tech check for street cars is a solid battery. If its loose they won't let you race. Helmets won't be needed for any regular Fiero's. Just tell them you are going to run 15seconds and they will let you go. If you think you are going to run 13 or better then bring a Helmut or borrow one. Long sleeved shirt or jacket must be worn. Windows must be up. Antifreeze is suppose to be drained, but frankly as long as you drain your coolant res and and tell them you are running water they will look the other way. Tires can't be balled, so long as you are above your wear bars everything will be good. If I can answer any questions for anyone please speak up, and I'll offer what information I have. It is a TOTALLY WONDERFUL FEELING. I have a Nitrous Bottle here that I could loan out to someone if they really wanted to play a bit. Harrison if you can get off work early it would be a great idea, the lines start really early to get in, I got there late one day and the line was nearly 1/2 mile long to get in the gates. |

Well that was fun :)
Car wasn't running as well as It should be, was studdering and losing power half way down on a couple runs. My first run was my best time but only 14.9 @90. And that was after not noticing the light went green My fastest et was 91.24 on a 15.1 run. Definitely need more practice on my launches. I'll probably go again next summer when it's running better and see how much quicker I can get it. |

Congrats on getting out there, its definatly something that takes practice. In one day, with my 2.9 Fiero I did everything from 16.1 to 14.6 all boils down to the perfect RPM to launch and feel the tires, then hitting your shift points perfect. It is a ball to do though. How many passes did you get in. A good night is usually 5 passes, a bad night is 3 runs. Half the fun of being out there is talking to other racers and watching the really fast cars going. Side note we made it to Oregon with no major drama my Black Fiero is off at FOY Racing getting its new motor. |

I got 5 runs in before I left, there may have been 1 or 2 more but not sure.
There were lots of cool cars there, including a factory 5 GTM as well as the usual muscle cars and such. As fun as it was, I still prefer autocross I think. Although I do still want to get a proper run in when I know what I'm doing and the car has no issues to see what it really can do. |
