Pretty sure there was an old thread on this...  but WTF...   
I've italicized and "red'd" some points that I felt needed noting, and/or were brought up at the last meeting.

From ICBC:
Appearance / Condition — Collector Cars and Trucks
(a) EXTERIOR:
(i) Paint — Stock appearance. No primer, blemishes or missing trim. No visible body rust or bubbling. No dents or chips in bodywork
or bumpers. No stickers, except Combat Auto Theft (C.A.T.) stickers, club emblems or badges.
(ii) Wheels — Wheels and hubcaps appropriate to the era of manufacture. Documentation will be required for era correct aftermarket wheels.
(iii) Tires — Stock appearance. Radials okay if kept in the spirit of original issue.
(iv) Convertible top — Undamaged and in good working condition.

(b) INTERIOR:
(i) Sound system — Era correct aftermarket sound systems including speaker grills, cassette decks or CD players. May upgrade
equipment by replacing tubes with transistors, providing the appearance and function of the radio remains era correct.
(ii) Upholstery — Restored or good original condition, including seats, door panels, headliners, dashboard, armrests. If the vehicle
is primarily in original condition, minor neat repairs to the original upholstery are acceptable. Seat covers, except originals, must
be removed to display original seats. Lack of maintenance (rips, grease stains, torn seams, etc.) may disqualify the vehicle.
(iii) Flooring/carpeting — Original or reproductions in good condition.

(c) ENGINE COMPARTMENT:
(i) Exceptionally clean. No rust, grime, dirt or chipped paint. Detailed if necessary.
(ii) Era correct options only. Aftermarket dressup should be era correct.
(iii) Engine should be stock engine for the year of manufacture. Era correct headers, intake manifolds and replacement carburetors.
(iv) No propane or natural gas conversions acceptable unless OEM fitted.

(d) BODY/CHASSIS:
(i) No alterations from stock, including chopping, channeling, lowering, aftermarket suspensions, blacked-out or darkened windows,
chroming of stock parts, or camperized vehicles. Hot rods and modified vehicles are also not acceptable.
(ii) Era specific non-factory options e.g., extra chrome, instrumentation (tachometers, etc.), custom steering wheels, CBs,
canopies, campers, etc. may be permitted.

We will consider the following exceptions, providing they are in keeping with the era of manufacture of motor vehicle; exterior sun visors, fog
lamps, rear bumpers on trucks, mud flaps, temperature, ammeter and oil gauges, air-conditioning, continental kits, trailer hitches on vehicles
equipped with towing packages sufficient for towing a trailer.

Factory Options: Due to the large number of factory stock options available at the time of manufacture, you may be required to produce
factory literature to authenticate that your vehicle conforms with the manufacturer’s original specifications, and that any options on the vehicle are approved factory stock options.


Qualifying for Collector Rate Class and Insurance
Collector vehicle status does not automatically entitle a person to reduced-premium insurance. To qualify for a collector rate class and reduced premiums, the applicant must own or lease a non-collector motor vehicle for general transportation purposes THAT IS:
• registered and licensed in B.C., AND
• insured in rate class 001, 002, 003, 004, 005, 007, 011, 012, 013, 014, 015, 017, 021, 022, 023, 024, 027, 310, 311, 312, 313, 314, 320,
321, 322, 323 or 324.
Company-owned vehicles may qualify as general transportation vehicles, provided they meet the criteria above and so long as the applicant is the assigned operator for the company vehicle.

If You Have No General Transportation Vehicle

If you do not own/lease a qualifying general transportation vehicle you may display collector plates on your vehicle, but the collector vehicle
must:
• be rated in rate class 001, 005, 021 or one of the 300-series motorcycle rate classes, AND
• (as with all collector vehicles) cannot be used for driving to or from, or part way to or from, work or school.

So, in my eyes - if you only have the Fiero, and you're retired (so no work or school!) you COULD still
get your plates, but possibly NOT at the reduced rate.

I hate to open this cam of worms again, but what was the final consensus regarding where a collector car is allowed to be parked at night? (ie. street parking, "secure" parking, etc.)

I believe concensus was there was no restriction unless your collector car was an "agreed value" policy.

HOWEVER...I do remember reading on the form something about what happens if your collector plates get stolen and where you parked your car has consideration. Maybe the good Dr can find something on that too.

You just described me to a "T" ... Retired and with a
Fiero that still looks almost brand new and has
virtually no modifications and no after market pieces
on it. All I need are some repairs to the drivers seat
(does anyone have a gray one in good shape that
they would like to sell?) then I will be submitting my
application to ICBC and maybe, just maybe, I'll get
my collectors plates. It's one of the the only good
things that I've found about being old!

Good luck, Dave. We'll keep our eyes open for you. Fiero seats in good condition are kind of hard to find.

Kind of hard to find???  

You're probably best off to find a good upholstery shop that can match the material, including the piping.  Make sure they rebuild all the foam as well.

Not sure if Mr.Mikes does cloth reproductions or not.

good used seat (or at least a good seat cover) within
the next couple of weeks.

Dragging up the topic of collector plates again, my first renewal is coming up. Base insurance this year went down. It's $119.   

It's the rest of the stuff - (comprehensive, collision, 3rd party liability, glass etc) that adds an additional $200 to the total. Still not a bad deal if you have another car as a daily driver.

I'll pipe in here and say that Mr. Mike's seat covers are the best. Very easy to install with a couple of hours and you can build up the seat the way you want before you put them on. Not sure if they would qualify though.. would the ICBC person know do you think if it has a fiero emblem on it like his seat covers do? Possibly the leather ones are out.. but cloth would be fine maybe.

My leather MM's are a virtual clone of the factory original (leather) ones.  Color isn't dead on - but the intent is there.  Even the logo on the headrest is the same.

There was a leather seat option in 1985 so I'm pretty sure it should pass. You might check with ICBC first. I'm sure if your factory seats are torn or totally worn out, seat covers would be considered a safety upgrade.

If the after market seats replicate the factory optional ones I'm sure you won't have any problems.

Sad what GM came to - the factory leather Solstice seats make you slide around, have seams that wear and are out of line. And they cost $1000 extra!

I was glad that the one I bought had the lower production cloth seats, we'll just have to see how they hold up.

That is only for cars prior to 1958.  Fieros don't qualify.

Seems to me they keep kicking up the cut-off year for that.  So, I figure in another 30 years or so, they might....  

(of course, it won't matter anyhow since the planet is doomed after Dec 21st, 2012 anyhow!)

That class is intended for old style rods. It was a cut off of 1948 and was moved up to 1958 a few years ago (which is how I got my Jamaican bodied MGA with 3.4 engine into collectors).

Exactly....

At one point, a '58 was a new car.  As was a '48.  Then they got old.
'80s were new.  Then they got old.  Then they'll get older!

So possibly - in another 30 years from now when they're 55-60 years old, they TOO will be an old style rod (as gas will be outlawed, and everyone's driving around in their Mr.Fusion powered electro hover car).
