Red '86 GT with a stuck (up) right headlight. Answers to "Blinky". License plate JNH-747

I parked it behind the Clova Cinema (in Cloverdale) at 7pm so I could catch their double-feature. Wasn't there anymore when the movies were over. At least I only had my mp3 player (a cheap one for the car) and driving gloves in there. And if the stereo deck is gone I'll be kinda relieved, s'long as they give me a over a hundred for it. Was the P/Os, had a usb plugin that was handy, but was difficult to use.

I only bought it August 9th! And if it gets trashed I'll have a lot of trouble finding another in as good shape for the price

Please call the cops if you see it around.

That truly sucks, sorry to hear your car got ripped off.

Haven't seen it around here but will definitely let the cops know if I do. Make sure to let us know how it goes though.

Man that sucks, if you have pics of the car post them up.  I am on the road a lot for work, so I will keep my eye out for it.

I only have one picture, from the PO, but it should give the general idea.

Probably parked somewhere waiting to be found by now. I sure hope it gets called in soon.

It's been recovered!

I just got the call. Apparently the only obvious damage is to the steering column, where they broke it open to hotwire it. However, it was involved in a HIGH SPEED PURSUIT.

I'll post further updates once I've seen it. Might be a while because the cops want to run forensics through the car, and then ICBC gets it.

High speed pursuit...be interesting to hear the story.  If you need a steering column or repair we all know the guy...Russell in Langley, there is a thread on him, he has several Fiero Columns and parts to fix.

Sorry to hear the hassle you are going through...keep us posted

And on this note...  I'm going out this afternoon to p/u an alarm for my black 86GT since I'm driving it around a bit now.....   sigh....

Might be something to the islamic "loose the hand that stole it" theory.

Yep just goes to show, if you drive a Fiero in the lower mainland, you need to have some sort of anti theft device in the car.   In most cases even something simple like a club on the wheel will deter car thief's, as they will just move on to an easier target.  However I really like having my Keyless entry / starter disable alarms.  One button, I hear a chirp and know all my doors are locked and the starter is disabled.

Good to know your car's been recovered.

I have a club in my car and a battery disconnect in the engine bay of my Fiero.  If somebody really wants my car badly, they'll have to work for it.

Hope the repairs get sorted out quickly.

Easy way to disable the car and it will cost you about 1/2 hour of your time, a bit of wire, and a $2.00 toggle switch. Splice the toggle into the fuel pump relay behind the air cleaner and put the switch in the cabin some place. Simply turn it off and the car will never start. Done deal.

Thanks for the tips. I'm definitely considering an alarm/passive disable system now.

I didn't mention this before, but the most annoying thing about it being stolen was that I was going to be installing a battery disconnect switch August 22nd. It was literally stolen hours before I had the chance to. I should have been using a club in the mean time. I just have so many little projects with the car that I didn't really think of it as actually really existing yet.

By the way, I haven't heard back from the RCMP or ICBC regarding it yet. Presumably that means the forensic team is still working with it.

Although any time I say that I'm reminded of the scene in The Big Lebowski, when he recovers his car. I guess you'd have to have seen it...

Have the engine gone over with a fine tooth comb (not just "yeah it runs") - suspension could have hidden damage, clutch, tire wear, etc etc.

Once you sign off on it, ICBC will give you nothing.

I have to 2nd what the good doctor has to say, when a car is stolen, the term "Drive it like you stole it" really earns its marks.

If a person does not care about what they do to the car, they can do an infinite amount of damage in a very short time.   IE running it off curbs, attempting to drift it, attempting burn outs, redlining the engine repeatedly.  Parts can become severely worn but not yet fail, so you will get the car back and a month down the road, the engine will throw a rod bearing, or a ball joint will sheer off due to stress.   Have all the motor mounts, suspension mounts and everything else you can think of checked for stress cracks.

Also along the lines of a disabler, I would make yourself comfortable with the fuse panel and pull out at the very least the fuel pump fuse, if not both of the fuses for the V6 fuel injection, and if you are in a really bad place, pull out the coil wire.   Oh and don't leave spare fuses in the car. :)

That has been a really big concern of mine. Are there any particular garages or people you would recommend for this? I'm not in the least qualified myself. I do have a really clean PPI from August 9th. Should I expect to pay for the inspection myself, or should ICBC cover it? Peace of mind is priceless to me, of course.

Latest update:

I had to call the RCMP to find out that ICBC has picked up my car. My adjuster is unreachable, and has not tried to contact me. I have a number for his work partner that I'm going to try tomorrow.

I had the opportunity to check my car out today. Nothing stolen, thankfully. Body and interior seemed to basically be in the same condition they had been. Driver's side window and dew wipe got messed up a bit, as well as the driver's side GT window.

I had filled my tank right before it got stolen and I reset the odo because I'm checking out what kind of mileage the car gets, so I can tell that it has been driven about 240 kms. For that drive, the @#$% must not have been able to see the bright red BRAKE light, because my hand brake doesn't work anymore. Rear tires went from like-new to hardly there. Couldn't tell anything else from the brief time I had with the car.

If anyone has any recommendations for a Langley area shop that'd be good for giving the car a solid looking-over I'd love to hear it.

But anyways! It's back, and should be back in ship-shape pretty soon. I'm looking forward to the next meet.
