I wish I took a picture, but has anyone every seen the head of a lock nut pop off?...well David almost got nailed by one of mine after the tire was put back on.  With the upgrade we bought the 54mm wheel studs and with the tuner nuts, they are too shallow.  We checked them tonight and David grinded off 2-3 threads per bolt (2-3mm) to allow the nuts to bolt on without the concern of them also popping off their heads...lol...Thanks David.

Just adding 2 pics, 1st showing major benefit of the Grand Am brake upgrade, that the rotors are much thicker and vented and the 2nd pic, showing the Brian doing the finishing touches.  Seeing as he is too shy to post the pic of him it it.  LOL.  Cheers Brian.

 

 

 

 

 

 

    So far the only issue aside from one of his wheel nuts almost shooting me in my ......... is there is a slight chance the hub was machined off.  There appears to be a small wobble in the rotor.  

 

It will have to be checked again to find out exactly what is going on.  Brian said the car brakes straight, but you can actually see the rotor move up and down when you have the car jacked up and spin the wheel.

I thought you were sleeping?...lol...no noise on the drive home also David, so far so good:)...and I pounded on the brakes a few times to see if anything would shift on that right side.

Ya I am suppose to be sleeping, have to be up in oh 4 1/2 hours.  LOL.

 

Glad to hear the brakes are being good little boys.   I pounded that one pad retainer clip pretty good.  Not really sure how much good it did.  I am curious though, if the lug nuts were not torquing down correctly, if that could have affected how the rotor was seating.  Hmm.  Well I guess give it some time and see how it goes.

Well, once I tightened up from home they were not making any noise until I arrived at your place, so let's hope that worked...I'll drive the car in the next few days and see, as long as it's not when I am working at the NAT, too many foul balls and allot of cars get nailed...lol

So how do they feel?  And what pads did you go with btw?  Regular semi-metallics?

 

PS hmm no SS brake lines yet?? still in transit?

Hey Austin,

They feel great:)...the SS lines arrived yesterday and I plan to install them on Sunday with a full flush. 

I went to NAPA, here is the parts list if you require it...see my note on the whell studs, watch out for that if you have tuner nuts:

641-1581 Wheel Bolt

242-2146 Brake Caliper

AE7192M Brake Pads...Preimium pads

48-85839 Rotor

Then the bearings & seals of course and used Lucas Syn grease

Just adding some feedback.  I did this swap Saturday and this is what I've noticed. 

Stock, as you push the pedal more the the pedal gets firmer but you don't really stop a whole lot harder.  With these, the pedal feels softer but the brakes also stop harder much more proportionally.  The travel is a bit more than stock but I'm pretty split between leaving it the way it is or moving to a bigger master cylinder.

My only other concern is now the fronts do more work.  Stock, I think the brake balance is fairly well balanced.  I was told that when I was at Mission last year I was JUST barely locking the inside rear while going hard into corners .  Now the brake bias is shifted forward.

In short, the brakes feel much more significant and the car stops with assurance.  We shall see this Wednesday though how they fair under repeated stops

Edited to add:  I've got the Larger S10 Brake booster as well that I installed sometime last year.  A definate worthwhile upgrade if you are wanting to keep stock brakes but an easier to push brake pedal.

Well so far with the new SS brakes lines, very comfortable and confident stopping, but I can see the bias issue...I hope to brake early enough going into the turns:).

I do plan the larger S10 Booster, but I will chat with you about what you did with your backs, I will upgrade these next year.

One thing we have to keep an eye on is tire heat, especially on autocross days, I plan on a spray bottle of water to cool down the tires between runs.  After 3 laps or so we probably will feel the tires getting greay, if so we can pit and cool them down.  The new tread I have are sticky, but when overheated as with most R-Comps they soften too much when overheated.

Oh, Kerstin got her helmet today...now we are both "Bobble-heads"...lol

      Oh I just had the funniest image pop into my head.  Brian, you and Kirsten in the Fiero, with racing numbers on the side, tunes cranked up, helmets on, shaking your heads in a kinda Wayne's World thing to the music, cruising down Columbia in New West.  Maybe cruising by a cop, giving him the thumbs up.
