Was having some 'issues' with the ol' E6600 PC the last few days (it's been RATHER hot in here, with a room temp of 30-32C!) so I blamed the CPU temp of 59-61C on that (yes, I have a decent active cooler on it!).

Thinking that it seemed a little toasty though, I looked up the max temp for the E6600.  Intel sez: Max temp - 62C!  Eek!

Last night it actually locked up on me too!  Not good.

Pulled it apart, alco-wiped the heatsink and CPU down.  Slapped on a thin layer of genuine Arctic Silver 5.  So far (with a much cooler room temp) I'm running 44-46C.  Amazing what 5 min's of work can do!  :)

Addendum: Ran a CPU torture tester program.

Room temp 26C (yes, at ~9am!).
After 6 min's (it had leveled off after 4) it went up to 59-60C.

Killed the program, and within 30 seconds it was down to 50c, after another 5 min's, it's cruising at 48C (with only the O/S load).

Ha ha...  I love replying to myself...   :)

Looks like although yeah, it's toasty....  It's not AS HOT as I thought.
Seems there's 3 temp sensors, and I was looking at the hot one.  Not the core ones.

Green line is the "CPU".
Red & grey are core 0 & core 1.

So - toasty, but not within 1C of critical as I was thinking it was.

Yep Artic Silver is great stuff.  Are you running the stock cooler?  If so pony up the 30-40 bucks for a good copper heat sink. The one I have runs a 120mm fan.  Yes the CPU fan is a 120m fan. Works awesome.  Don't get much over 30C even while doing video encoding.

Well - if the room air temp is 30C - I'll be hard pressed to get <= it!
(you know - that whole abiding by the laws of physics and all!)

If I had water cooling or something though, then yeah - I could drop below ambient.

(oh, and no - I'm not going to drag a hose across the room to suck air in from outside!)

Na just get creative,

You remember this shot, air cooling can be cooool.

Although I ran my air duct from outside, I am sure you get get a small A/C system, one of those stand alone units, duct a small amount of the air to the PC and have the rest blowing on you while you were at the desk to keep yourself cool at the same time.

And with all that extra cooling capacity, your computer will run STARCRAFT II!!! How cool is that?
Never shift into reverse without a back-up plan.
