They're readily available. Keep in mind the heater core is different depending on whether or not you have A/C.

Canadian Tire is the last place I'd buy car parts. Where in Canada are you? It's a big country! We might be able to better point you in the right direction if you narrow down your location somewhat.

Stefan, you're not making this much easier for me. Walnut Grove - Is that Langley? Clubs members get discounts at Lordco and Napa (if I remember correctly). I live in Vancouver and buy most of my stuff at a local place called VAP. Maybe someone who lives closer to Langley (if that's where you are!) will post and recommend a place handy to you. And by all means you'd be most welcome to come to the next club meeting in June.

Can tell your a Vancouverite Patrick:)...lol, Walnut Grove is in Langley:).
I had to buy a 2nd one as the 1st blew a seal within 2 years, and I drive my car part time summer only, so I don't use the heater often, go figure...lol I bought mine with the club discount at Lordco, with A/C under $80...just make sure you buy the right one Stefan. When you become a member, David aka Captain can provide you the Lordco & NAPA club info for discounts, every little bit helps:). |

Stephan, phone around (or email) to several auto parts suppliers in your area. I find that prices on this kind of stuff can vary quite a bit from place to place. Just for comparison purposes, you can phone the place I deal with in Vancouver (VAP) and ask for a price on the heater core you need. I find their prices to be more than fair. Their phone number is

I would also try calling your local friendly Radiator shop. Sometimes they get better prices and will beat Chain stores eg Lordco/Napa etc. I shopped around and there's a place in North Van i bought mine from called AERS Auto. Don't remember brand or price but I know it was about $20something cheaper and great quality too. Hopefully you can find a shop similar near you. |

Make sure you change it out from the front then... from the spare tire compartment. It's an easy job. The toughest challenge will be to get the hoses off the old heater core tubes. After a couple of decades the rubber hoses practically "bond" to the metal. The less air you introduce into the cooling system the better. Remember to "burp" the system afterwards. Might be some tips for you Here.

Did yours have a ground strap on it?
I've seen some that have it, some don't! I imagine over the years some people yanked them off if they did have them. Or maybe it was only on the later years. Not sure. Anyhow, I'm starting to wonder if some of the cars that seem to eat one every year or so and DON'T have the strap.... well... it might make a difference! Something to do with the copper or brass being stripped away sort of like in electroplating. But in this case, the core is becoming the sacrificial metal! If they have a ground on them though, everything stays at the same level electrically. |

No strap on my old or new heater core, and the heater core I removed didn't look very old at all. So you might be onto something !!!
