So...  '86 (small tank of course) GT, V6, 4spd.

Range: 273KM's from fill, doing about 80% city driving.

Want to know how I know this is as far as it can go?  Want to know who's gas gauge reads a hair under a 1/4 tank when it's empty?  Seeing a correlation?!  

Couldn't have timed it much better though - made the turn just before work (few hundred meters) and it coughed a bit - thought nothing of it, pulled into my parking spot and...  sputter, sputter...  dead.

lol...guage a little off:)...I know when I reach 200km and even if the needle shows 1/4 tank, fill it as it drops real quick for my car.

I get about 300kms mixed city and highway driving in a spirited manor, or 480-500 of pure highway driving. However when my needle gets down to a line below a 1/4 it will sputter accelerating through hard corners. However with the current price of fuel, I think there is going to be a run on the Econo 3.32 transaxles for Fiero's.

Everybody BACK OFF, the first ones mine. :)

I would really like to know why my mileage is sh*t, kills me to hear everyone else getting at least 75km more than I do.

Brian you have 3 things going against you. 3.2L motor, 19# injectors and worst of it, a 4spd trans.

Get a 5spd in there and you are going to see a large jump in mileage, also when was the last time you did an O2 sensor swap?

How are the plugs, wires and such on your car.   I know we just put on a new cap and rotor? When was the last time someone checked the ignition timing on your motor?   If it runs great on 87oct, chances are it needs to be bumped a bit.

Ok, ya with the mods sure...the o2 was just done by Dr. Fiero in April, the plugs well, since the rebuild and the wires still look great...but worth checking the timing, etc...we'll chat as it may need a tune up.

Since the new CAT, I have noticed an improvement, and the tweak you did, it hasn't stalled since:)

As a short term fix, find some larger wheels and tires to put on the car, up-sizing the tire wheel package can really help.

If you want to spend lots of money, go with really big wheels and low pro tires.

If you want to save a few bucks, go with something like 16" wheels and 60 series tires. Like 225/60/16 will give you at least a 10% reduction in rpms on the highway.   If we bump your timing up a few more degree's it will probably be very less noticeable the loss of gearing with the bigger tires.



Wait Wait, I just thought of something.

You have a copy of my old chip right? The one cracker made for you. When we did your 19# injectors If you are still running the same program from that chip burn, your base timing should be at least 2 degree's over stock if not 4 degrees over. We set a high rpm retard in the chip. This was to allow extra base timing at low rpms to help with the torque in the bottom that was lost due to the bigger cam and lower cylinder pressures due to bleed off. Once the motor spun up, and started building cylinder pressures we had to take some timing out to keep it from pinging.   I am betting that is one of your issues. No one aside from Cracker and I would know, about this mod, and chances are Cracker does not remember that suttle little tweak.   

     If you want to do this before you see me, just take it to any shop that knows how to set your timing have them set your base timing to 14' BTDC. I am betting you are going to be amazed at the difference.

wow i'm happy if i get 200km/s on the highway, usually i get from 160km - 170ish but the replacement injectors are on their way

Luke you IIRC have an auto and drive it almost as hard as I do my car.


With a tune up properly ALL Fiero's should get at least 300kms to a tank of gas, even the worst lowest geared of them all on the highway.

Oh by the way, Luke could you PM me your phone number, need to chat about hubs.   I am getting really close to having my 85GT back on the road and its going to need the extra brakes.

I twice got 406+ kms on a tank strickly highway in my 87 v6 auto.

but my 86 is tired (391,000kms) and gets 220kms city driving (also a v6 auto)

After listening i think a timing check is in order.

my timing is set at 8' and ive just recently done a tune up too, fuel filter, airfilter, pcv, oil changes every 3 months

I do almost nothing but city driving, with my foot in it most of the time, and get mid-200s on about 30 litres of gas with my 4-speed V6. I haven't done enough long highway journeys (in particular, none that didn't include significant amounts of bumper-to-bumper stop-and-go sections) so I don't have a handle on highway efficiency, but a run out to Chilliwack after I fixed my headlights (thanks Cap'n) seemed to use very little fuel.

Well those that come on the run, we will be driving just over 300kms start to finish, so if we wait till Abby to fill up, there should be no problem going all the way and back before a fill up. Will be a good way to test multiple cars over a fixed distance.

On my coupe with the 3800 tpi auto I'm getting 235km to 25 L. That's spirited in-town driving only.

So 9.4KM per lt?...not bad.  I am getting better mileage on my Fiero than my Grand AM from the last tank...6.4KM per lt, somethings wrong there...lol

If my wife was driving the same km on the same route with the same car it would be more like 13 to 15 km per L.

I managed to get the car filled up and held off as long as I felt comfortable to fill it up again.  Went 334 kms on about 32 liters.  I posted the details in the spec thread.

I did a Long trip yesterday. 880 km's for 102 litres = 8.63/km

That' Burnaby, Hwy 1, over Hwy 3 to Osoyoos, up Hwy 97 via Penticton and  Peachland, back over to Merrit, Coquihalla, Hwy 1 return.

Lots of Hwy climbing, and the weather was 36 C over in the Okanagan. Had the Car engine fan on all the time while in the Okanagan - worked well.

Speed was pretty consant on Hwy 1 and Hwy 3 at 120 K,

down to 80 k in Okanagan re: heavy traffic. The biggest drain was climbing back up to the summit out of Peachland - goes on forever.

Still got 8 km per litre. This is with driver and passenger and a trunk full of Fruit.

 

Quirky stuff: After filling up with hIgh grade fuel the night before the trip - wouldn't start first thing the next morning.

The car had a lot of hesitation throught out the trip and the idle varied a lot - normally its consant idle, once warm at 1000 rpm.

On the long decents my engine check light would came on?

If were running the econo chip, which is it looks like you were, the chip is not programed for high test and actually loses a bit of power with it, if you were using the performance chip, the fuel and timing maps are setup to run high test and make the most use out of it.  If you want to use the econo chip with high test, you can set your base timing up to about 12 degrees and the car will perform well with it.

As for the check engine light coming on, on steep downgrades that is normal.  If you check your codes it should have a MAP sensor code.  The Fiero ECM chokes and gets a bit confused when it see's you "closed throttle", medium to high rpm, for more than about 10kms.  Lisa and I ran into this problem going through the Gorge in Oregon.  There were places, where you would be going downhill, for 20 miles. Never touched the gas once.  After a bit, the ECM thinks there must be something wrong with the MAP sensor and spits out a code.  It should have went away once you started driving on normal flat ground again.
