Topic: Thermostat Hose Posted: 04 October 2008 at 11:33pm |
Hey everyone, I have yet another interesting problem. After I drive my car for a while, and then let it sit for a while, the upper coolant hose on the engine collapses. Once I open the thermostat housing cap the hose returns to normal, then I top up the coolant in it and carry on my merry way. However, after I drive it again, then letting it sit again, it collapses. The coolant I top it up with just ends up in the overflow tank. First I thought it was the thermostat. So I replaced it, but it still collapses. What do you think is causing this? On another note, it turns out that for the last two years I've needed a new thermostat. The old one was stuck open and 10 degrees to cold. lol. Thanks. Oh and sorry for the horrible grammer, I just got home from a closing shift. |

my thought change your radiator cap or test it...... its not letting the overflow coolant back into the system Marcel |

I agree with Marcel, for the price change both, the themostat and even go to GM and buy the overflow cap as I posted a few months back...made a huge difference.

I replaced my radiator cap today and after it sat for a while it still collapsed. Also, assuming that everything was working properly, if I opened the thermostat cap, should it be to the brim of coolant or should the coolant be down by the thermostat. I'll go to GM as soon as possible to get the other two caps. I'll be posting a picture shortly if this continues. Thanks.

Remember too, that almost ALL places will sell you the wrong radiator cap (the one up front).
If they tell you it's a 10231, get a 10230 (or the other way around! I can't remember anymore). You can tell if it's the correct one by holding the cap so the seal points down. The "dingle valve" in the middle should NOT hang down - it should be yanked up by spring tension. You can hook it with a fingernail and it'll easily pull up, then get snapped back down when you let go. Another thing to check for, is that the hose going from your puke tank to the rad isn't dying (collapsed, etc). We'll assume you have no overheating issues? |

They did give me the wrong one 10231. I went to JB and got the 10230. I put it on and now my Fiero is running perfect again. No, I wasn't having any overheating issues but that was my main concern. Thanks for the help. Just out of curiosity, if the 10231 is the wrong part for the 88 GT, is it the right part for any other Fiero? Or is it just a mistake in Lordco's database. This kinda reminds me of when a guy at Lordco told me I could put ATF in my Getrag. I am glad I didn't listen that day. |

It seems to be a globally wrong listing. It's wrong in all Dayco catalogs, so... the error just gets perpetuated. It's incorrect for all years of Fieros.
