Hey all.
I've just been to take a look at an 87 GT for sale in Burnaby, maybe someone here can tell me what it's worth. The seller said make an offer. Silver, with minimal body damage (except for a few scrapes, scratches, and minor cracks), 270,000 kms with a 70,000km motor. Trans shifts great, motor pulls strong - the drivetrain is in great shape. The brake master cyl is shot - the pedal feels like silly putty! The interior is torn to rat$@!%, the driver's seat is almost unusable but for the most part, everything is there... headlights still function, there might be a few seal issues that probably won't be hard to fix (it has a leaky pop-up sunroof). All in all, I think I can get it for cheap. Real cheap. I'm not looking for a show car, I just always wanted a Fiero and don't mind fixing a few things here and there to make it road worthy. I see in one of the other posts that there are a lot of parts still available through Lordco and others... are these generic parts that fit all GMs of this era, or are they Fiero specific and therefore expensive? I would assume a lot of parts are interchangeable with other years.
Anyone know how much a brake master cyl is going to cost?

Expect to pay about $150 for the cylinder.  It's not really any different from any other GM product.  No weird ABS or anything to worry about.

If the interior is shot - just gut it, then clean up each and every part.  Replace what's toast (for the most part, all years are the same bits).  It only takes about 2-3 hours to remove every last part from the interior.

Remember the whole car is metric as you grab for wrenches etc...

I've got a full metric set and standard set... I have a Honda XR dirtbike, and a Jeep (which uses metric AND standard AND torx!)

How easy is it to paint the body panels? I've read tutorials on how to do a damn good rattlecan job for under $200 for a whole car. Will I need special paint because we're not dealing with metal?

What should I offer? Is $750 too low?

It's on the edge of being a parts car from the sounds of it.  500-750 is currently reasonable.

Don't waste your time rattle canning anything.  If you've got the time and energy to do it wrong - you can do it right.

To be honest though, unless you have access to a paint booth - strip the trim, clean it up properly (ie, all body work), then drive it to Earl Shibe, Macco, etc  and have them shoot it (remove the rear deck lid, and mask the bay! Also, prop the head light doors up with blocks of wood.)

It'll cost more than $200, but at least you won't have a pile of shmegma in 6 months.  Rattle cans are not catalyzed obviously, and although it'll look ok to start...  it won't last long.

Well any running fastback is worth $1000  even in poor shape.  If he will take 750 then you got a good deal.  If not I would offer up to 1200 for it and see what he does.    If the engine has truely been replaced with 70,000 on the motor and it was done correctly then it is worth it.
