Blame Johnny. He turned a so-so thread into something much more interesting with his photograph from 1962.

Who cares about Fords. For those who aren't familiar with it, Chevrolet had a fantastic high revving 302 cubic inch small block back in the late 60's.

The Northstar is a pretty gnarley engine, no denying that. I'm going to go ahead and add a couple more GM's I'm sure people have heard of: The LS7 and the LSx. The LS7, widely adored by engine swappers and Corvette Z06 owners, was a 7.0L (427ci) pushrod V8, with no thought given to price - it was to be the best damn V8 GM could make. At 505HP, 475ibs-ft of torque, weighing in at 405ibs and spinning happily all the way to 7250RPM, the thing was a monster. Dry sumped, aluminum heads/block, molybdenum rings, port fuel-injected, titanium intake valves, sodium filled stainless steel exhaust valves, headers and coil-on-plug ignition, the engine was not only phenominally powerful, but very reliable (VERY reliable - they can take 1000HP all day long) and also could manage 30MPG in the Corvette. If the LS7 was a surgeon's scalpel, the LSx can be thought of as a brutish cudgel. Available in either 454ci or 512ci, the LSx doesn't have much technology of any kind. It's a large, heavy iron block built with a singular purpose - to be invincible. GM's drag prototype was shown in 2006, and on the stock internals, it was doing 2200HP. The last I heard was back in late 2008, but it was apparently still running those stock internals just fine, and had been run for a total of 120 hours during various events and dyno sessions. Hard to deny an engine that manages over two-thousand horsepower without complaint. |

Just to confuse the issue, the LS7 designation was originally a 454 offered back in the early 70's as a crate engine. (Note the bolded last sentence below.) This was the engine that my buddy put into his '67 Impala SS. From Wikipedia:
You'd think with all the combinations of numbers and letters available that GM wouldn't have had to give two completely different engines the same name!

Oh. My. God. Marcel, if I didn't know, I'd have a tough time knowing that was you! You have more facial hair than I do! Car is phenominal. And yeah Patty, GM is rather silly that way. I knew they had an older engine named the LS7 as well, but as cool as it is, I love the modern LS7 more. |

Lets see favorite cool engines, I'd say the Northstar's and 3.4 TDC motors. Anything GM/Chevy with Twin Cams. Late model cool engine is the new I believe 3.0 L DOHC V8 that is pump gas runnable, 11,000rpm red-line and makes something like 550hp, I can't remember the car that it comes in though, it was on Top Gear in that funny sports car that has no body just a frame 2 seats and a mid engine motor. Wait, I think I remember the Aerial Atom. Really amazing motor. Would be great in a Fiero as the motor is tiny. |

Speaking of high-revving, small displacement V8's... The Roush Performance designed RST-V8. 2.4L, and weighs just 90Kg. Has five valves per cylinder, which I'm guessing helps it breathe at it's 10,500RPM HP peak (And it can continue revving up another thousand, if you need). Speaking of power peak, how many ponies did they wedge into that 2400cc motor? Well, if you stay away from forced induction, a paltry 380HP. With the supercharger strapped on? North of 500HP. Would be quite the quick little Fiero... |
