This is copied from a thread on Pennocks.  I am ordering at least one, if not 2 of these.  Skip to page 3 for the latest info.  It replaces the Aux gauge pod on V6 cars or can be added to cars that don't have an aux cluster.  Or you could mount it someplace else.   However being able to monitor extra fuel rates used, top speeds, average speeds and even 1/4 mile times, 0-60 times and other useful data will be amazing.  No one has ever made anything like this for our OBD1 cars.  I can't want to have this setup.  Will make recording my driving history so much easier. 

Before you ask no there is no set price yet.  That has to be determined when he gets the project into mass production.

Oh, and the fun part of the computer I told you about. Don't try to do the math on this as well. This was made using a simulator circuit that is not the most linear.

We are also talking about it on the http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/FIERO/?v=1&t=directo ry&ch=web&pub=groups&sec=dir&slk=1  yahoo groups list.  They have something like 2800 members so its a rather huge email list.  The reason I brought it up is somoen else had mpGuinio in his car and mentioned it.  The unit that this guy is building is setable for any type of Fiero, from 2.5 to big 7.4 and 8L V8's.

I want it for my 4.9 just to see how much worse or better the fuel economy is.  He claims 300hp and 30mpg.  So we shall see just how close he gets.

My plan right now, for the purposes of my course, is to take the signals going the volt and oil pressure gauges into an Arduino, and then out to a pair of 4 digit 7 segment displays. I like the idea of those 7-segment displays because they'll be pretty visible, have a decent operating temperature range, are cheap, and they fit in with the era of the car.

If I still have time, since those 7 segment displays won't take up the full width of the aux gauge cluster, I'm going to look into an LCD display which could be used to show temperature, acceleration from an accelerometer, and anything else I can think of. The schematic and code for the MPGuino are available, so I could look at those and integrate a simple trip computer, but at this point I just don't know how feasible that is for me. It'll depend on how well the first part of the project goes.

I agree, using straight led to controller uses quite a few I/O lines.  One could also use the max7219/7221 led drivers.  

Any update on your project for class?  I have been slowly plugging away. I do have a prototype in a car that I am testing at the moment, no pictures of it yet though.  A few items have been added or enhanced.  On of these is the estimation of wheel horsepower from the performance data.  Hopefully in the next month I will have something to show, probably sooner depending on weather.
