just wondering what the story is w/ the 87 fieros, do the emission laws apply? I kinda wanna go straight piped but idk if where allowed to round here...

It might help if you posted where "round here" was exactly.

From the AirCare website:

Quote A catalytic converter is necessary for all 1988 and newer vehicles to pass an AirCare inspection. Older vehicles may be able to pass inspection without a catalytic converter.

Keep in mind your '87 or older car still has meet the AirCare emission level requirements, with or without a cat.

Years ago, my '87 Duke would not pass AirCare before replacing the cat. Without a functional cat, the readings were simply too high. YMMV.

Yep what he said, 88 Fiero's are the only ones requried to have a cat to pass.   84-87 don't need one if they can pass the tail pipe emmissions test.

Hmm ok, whats needed to pass the tail pipe emmissions test?  What kind of things should i do to help my chances of passing??

BTW, "round here" is abbotsford to be specific...

? More specific? how do i know if ill pass? What do they check for? What engine problems would effect my chances of passing? etc..

There is no way to "know" if it will pass until you take it down and test it to find out if anything is wrong.

Just fill it up with Mohawk 94oct fuel, give it a good tune up, and make sure it is running well.

If you have a few bucks extra, it doesn't hurt anything to go and test it before you need it done, that way you have time to tweak things if it does not pass.

I've had great success by filling the car up @ Mohawk. (The difference with Mohawk and others is the Ethanol additive.) Then adding a cup of Methyl hydrate, which you can get at CT. Getting the car good and warmed up and then taking it for a "spirited" drive just before taking it in for the air care. 

I have never failed. However I do maintain regular maintenance on my vehicles as well.

I'm glad you passed.

ya, i was wondering if premium gas would help at all?   Does anyone know if the no-cat requirement only applies if i have the stock 2.8? If i swap in a 3.8 or w/e, do i need a cat, or can i go without?

I believe you wouldn't need a cat no matter what engine is in your '87 (or older car) as long as whatever engine you put in it didn't exceed the emission levels for the original engine.

There's a lot of debate over the use of any of these "band-aid" solutions. (The other one I'm aware of is isopropyl alcohol.)

I'm not saying I wouldn't try them myself if they worked, but not everyone is in agreement that they actually do enough to make a notable difference in emission levels if there's an underlying engine problem.

Ok short answer, you can put any engine you want in a a Fiero, even a 600hp Chevy V8 with a 6-871 BDS blower sticking out the deck, as long as it will pass the tailpipe test you are good to do. However if your FIERO is an 88 you must have a cat. Emissions testing are ALL to do about the car and really nothing to do about the engine.

As for Mohawk gas and additives, I run 1 full litre of Methyl hydrate in my tank along with 40 liters of 94oct Hohawk 10alc blended gas.   The reason for This is that it reduces NOX emission which is where our Fiero's have the hardest time.

If you have having a problem with hydrocarbons bump the ignition timing up a few notches to.
