at least of Ken's car.

Last night I sorted out the service history of my Fiero.  Including oil changes.   Starting from March 3, 1985 - the day my car went into service.  Seems the Fiero wasn't all that good a car.  I must have had great driving pleasure of the car because I hadn't noticed how often it had gone in for service.  There seemed to be 3 time periods where it was serviced a lot.   85-87, 91-93, 2003-2004.    It was flawless between 1993-2001 where all I have are oil changes and tires.  Also of note, everytime it went to a GM dealer for servicing, it went back the next day, and at least once more within a week later.  Which is consistant with what was happening with our Buick.   I remember a brake job in 1987 where the rear brakes seized the moment it hit the road while driving away from the dealer service that had just done the brake job.  Thankfully the first rash of problems were warranty items, and the second round of problems occured around a recall, though most of the things wrong had nothing to do with the recall.  The third set of problems were mostly electrical consistant with having a very old car.

Of major issues were clutches, distributor (coil and pole piece), headlight motors.

Electrical problems starting creeping up in 2003.  However, most of the lightbulbs on my car are still the original out of the factory bulbs from 1985.

Of note, the fuel pump was replaced in 1986 and in 1998.  So probably next year, I'm due for another fuel pump.   My Fiero is on its 4th battery.   It went Delco, Diehard, Delco, no-name.   The waterpump was also replaced in 2003.  Exhaust headers replaced in 2004 (Fierohut).

Overall, I'd say the Fiero has been a good daily driver.

Thats nice to see a history like that.   All in all I think Fiero's are great daily drivers.  Lisa and I drove my 88GT all the way to LA California, and over to Vegas and back and had no major issues on a 5000+km road trip.   As long as a car is maintained with good parts, they are very reliable.   Its the people that put cheap junk parts in there car, then a few years into it and there car is filled with cheap crap quality parts and they start complaining that everything is falling apart.

Well just be happy you do take very good care of your car.  P.S. when you replace the fuel pump, get the pump listed for the 88 Fiero.  It is pretty much a direct install, but is re-designed and is frankly a better pump.

The guy who worked for GM in the 80's who gave your dad that info is the reason why GM is in such dire straits today.
