i know this is kind of a no-no topic, but im gunna ask anyways. If i were to buy a vehicle in alberta and bring it here, id have to get it inspected before i can insure it. I already have an insured fiero here, and since all fastbacks look alike, couldn't i just swap the vin plates to bypass the inspection?  Any reason why this wouldn't work?

Hmm... I'm sure there's something to it, but then again, my cousin used to do it regularly (He was in the wrong line of work) so I guess it shouldn't be all that hard...

Alright I am not encouraging Vin swapping, however if you do, do it.

1st the car you take the Vin off of has to go away, and that Vin must now stay on the new car, forever.   If you ever get in a wreck or have to have the car re-checked, and they find the Vin is wrong, you better bring the lube.

There are 2 main Vin locations, one on the dash, (well not really on the dash as its riveted to the frame near the dash)   Then a 2nd one that is riveted to the frame just above the steering coulomb, you have to remove the dash and speedo cluster to get to it.

On early cars the only other location for VIN is on the door jam sticker.         On later cars, 87/88 the Vin is on all the panels, hood, fenders, deck lid, roof panel.   This was to aid and prevent theft.

Next up is altering the rivets you use to make them look weathered, a good exposure to salt and water can cause enough surface rust quickly to make them look original.      While you have everything apart, you are going to want to change the odometer to match the new Vin, this is fairly easy as the Fiero does not have a tamper proof odometer, just take it apart, change it and put it back in.

Now again, the "old" car you took the Vin from must go away, cut it up, strip it, burn it, sink it in a lake, if it ever turns up, and someone finds a way to link the Vin to your current car, you are going to jail.  Say good bye to your life as you now know it, also with the criminal record, have fun trying to visit places outside of Canada.

In my opinion, its really not worth it, not unless you have access to a full chop shop.

I say do the import thing, even if it costs you $1000 to get it to spec, its still a lot cheaper than gambling on going to jail, and loosing several years of your life.

LOL! My favorite part is the bit about weathering the rivets. The Capt'n is a man concerned with details!

How's the wife doing btw? On a personal note... treasure the days when the buster is in the womb... no crying!

Yeah that was my 2nd fav. Especially because he repeated it a couple of times.

HAHA I'm still sitting here at my computer desk laughing, thinking about Capt'n planning an Ocean's 11 style scheme with his buddies about changing the vin's..

"Bobby, you find a lake!" "Jim, get the gas and the matches" "Tom, you need to get some salt water for weathering purposes." "Hmm... we need a 4th... ahh John." "John you get the sawzall." "Alright team, let's do this!"
I wanna go fast.

Aw, come on Matt. We've all thought about robbing banks. I'm just waiting for the economy to swing back. Need something in the vault to steal, ya know?

LOL, well most people just don't know how to do things questionable right their first time doing it.  I'd rather help someone and see them not in jail, than stand back and watch the crap hit the fan.

O/T Baby and Wife Related, read only if you are interested.

As for the wife, well she is 7 months and a bit, she's at the uncomfortable stage, which to put it mildly is Uhm, short tempered.   One of the members on here is working on the video edits for the 4d colour Ultrasound, the baby has my chin and her lips.  Is also going to be a min 8lbs if not 9lbs when born.   Rather flexible too, kept sucking on its toes and managed to yawn for the camera.  Also has lots of hair on its head already.   (we know the sex, but won't post it till the video is done)

Vin Swapping

Its Illegal

Provincial saftey inspection cost about $100.

"Out of province" verification add $50 to $75

I beleive Canadain Tire is set up to do both.

cdn tire is just doing an inspection and checking and reporting

no work to be performed

if you fail at least you have the option of who you want to fix it

i use AnA in langley for the inspections and do the work myself

cdn tire was mentioned because they are everywhere and icbc recognizes and approves of them and they probabbly the cheapest for the inspection
