Hello all,new guy here at this forum.thanks for the sign up.first off i have
allwas loved the FIERO,great little sports car.i had one new in 85-
2m4.now 24 years later i have anouther-86/GT-auto.i am an
accomplished mechanic an have built top fuel ENG.anyhow i would like to
know more about this year of FIERO,it has the 2.8 in it with the top end of
the ENG apart!! short block no heads.not sure why it was taken apart in
the first place?i org wanted to repower it but iam on a buddget, famly guy.
NO CASH$$$ so i guess its going back togther as a 2.8. with all the mods
out there a stock car will be ok for me.ive bought anouther Fiero 2.8
motor with a blown rod for $20 an will make one good motor out of the
two them.a little porting on the heads will be in order i think.an whats up
with the exhaust on this motor, small S/S manifolds? iam thinking of
building somthing a little better than the stock ones that are on it,what
do you think?i could even go as far as make them liquid cooled or air
cooled out of ALUM.wouldn't be that hard for me to build that SYS.marine
mechanic for over 25 years.an as for cooling them i wouldn't tye in to the
ENG cooling SYS,make it self contained SYS.i know theres no room on this
car for anouther rad but ill figger that out later.an was the 86 the year
with the bad rods? if so new motor time, won't spend any time on this
motor.allso i need rims for it,stock would be nice, anyone have a set let
me know.sorry about the long post ill keep it short in the future.any help
would be great.
THANKS

Welcome!

The "bad rods" were in the duke 4-cyl engines in '84.

Your idea for custom exhaust headers sounds interesting. Anything is better than what came on there from the factory! Check out the links in This thread.

Is the '86 GT you have the one that Glenn in Walnut Grove/Langley was selling a few months ago?

THANKS
IT wouldnt be hard to build an AIR cooled EXHOST for this car,any power
you put in it could be done, you simply add a bigger jacket around the
exsisting pipes, like a heat shield then wrap it with insol if you like, then a
scoop under the car to scoop up cool air, with it exiting out underneath
sister to the pipes that are allreddy there, liquid cooled would take a lot
more thought, but can be done.but i asure you i can do it.

Having rebuilt about 100 2.8's over the last 10 years or so I can tell you...  they're not a budget build.  Parts just aren't cheap for them.

If you can do it all yourself (sounds like it), you'll come in very close on a stock 4.9 AUTO swap IF you have access to cheap/free parts.  Buy a whole 91/2/3 caddy that was wrapped around a pole or something.  Build your own mounts, do your own exhaust, etc, etc....  you'd probably be on par with rebuilding a stock 2.8.  Sick eh?

Yea i bought Glenn in Walnut Grove/Langley,i wanted an loaded car an
this one is loaded, but its auto,a 6 speed would have bin nice.so you think
a re power is the way to go ah,a 4.9 caddy is the motor is the one to
get.my first thought was a Buick 3800 supercharged.it looks like an easy
install allso.i live out in the valley so pick a part allwas has cheap
motors.you just have to be there at the right time befor everything gets
robed from it.ive found rims for my car so i don't need them now.allso i
talked to a guy in Langley that has #2 86/87 GTs that he wants to sell for
$300 each, one with papers one with out an a extra 2.8 motor, there both
runners.would like to have a parts car but can't aford it at this
time.thanks for the advise on the motor, will prob end up with new
power.has anyone seen this-4.9-diesel Pontiac

Gotta love Pick-A-Part

I have seen them sell 32v Northstar motors for the $125 price tag.  (Thats a $3000 engine depending on where you go)    They use to sell Turbos for I think $25 and always meant to grab one.    They even sell the Getrag 5spds for next to nothing.  If that 88 GT is still there that would be a good grab.    If you are trying to put a 2.8 together, but a junked one and at the least use it as a map to build your first one.

Sorry I can't be much help at the moment, but thanks for the heads up on the sale, I am sure a few guys on here will be able to take advantage of it.
