I'm interested in a 3400 swap for my 85. From what I can gather its one of the easier swaps and requires little fabriaction. So far I've read that I'll have to relocate the alternator and the use of an ECM from a manual transmission 3400 would make things much easier. Does anyone else know something I should, or perhaps where I could find a detailed guide to the swap? I like the 3400 because I've had a bit of experiance with it, especially with how common the swap was with the J-Body guys, and I'd be more than happy with the ~180hp I'd get from it. If anyone had some tips or comments, I'd love to hear them. |

I don't know if anyone on this board has done a 3400 swap. There are a few that have done the 3.4 Camaro swap, which is a totally different motor. I only mention it so people reading the post realize a 3400 motor is not the same as the 3.4 motor.

Is there a reason not many of these swaps are done? Or is it just that people who change motors typically just go for something more powerful? I know they fit in the Cavi's and Sunbirds without much trouble and thought it would be cool to see about one in a Fiero. I can't find many resources on this swap in our cars. For the time and money would I be better off doing a mild 2.8L build? |

I haven't done the 3400 swap.
I think the main challenges would be integrating the 3400 ecm (Use this because of the dis, shouldn't be a huge deal though, they are all pretty similar) and there might be exhaust issues. I don't know if the fiero ex. manifolds will bolt up to the al heads, so you may need custom headers to fit the exhaust in. Maybe the stock cast manifolds will fit...not sure. Other than that it would be a nice easy swap. I suspect all the mounts would be the same. Chay |
