Glad to hear the vehicle made it down without issues. Keep us updated on the progress if you can. Kind of excited to see how it turns out.

Well I just got a message from FOY, the car is booked for the Dyno next Friday.  (Nov 2nd at 2pm)   I am so excited I am thinking about going down for the afternoon just to watch it go on the Dyno.  The car might be able to come home after the Dyno, but I am concerned that there might be some unexpected things pop up that hold back the power and FOY will want another day with the car to tweak it and re-test it.  I still might go down regardless to watch it be Dyno'ed.

The car made one trip to the dyno, but the dyno was having issues that never got sorted out, and the car needed more tuning time. With me in the hospital for over a week, I was never able to get down to pick it up. I am resting at home now, and was going to make an attempt this week to go and get the car but doctors appointment today said I still have decreased breath sounds in my left lung. (whatever that means) I was still going to try and make the run, but Junior from FOY stepped in said that he did not want me to risk the drive, and is going to drive it the 230 miles up to the customs office for me and then all I have to do is pick it up from there. US/Canada customs is less than 10 miles from my house. I will try and get it on a different dyno up here to see what the results are. I should have the car back in my hands Wednesday Nov 21st.

I am leaving for customs in a few mins.(10:30am pst) He won't be there until about 5pm, however with it being Black Friday the boarder line ups for Canadians going down to the US to buy stuff, (your US dollar has tanked so bad, we can buy stuff with CDN dollars and its like paying 1/2 price, then add the sale price and you get the picture) I am guessing it will be a 2hr line up just to get through customs. Now from what he has told me, they have a Modded 3800SC Fiero there that runs a documented 12.5 in the quarter and my 4.9 build will outrun it till about 80mph then the 3800SC starts pulling and passes the 4.9. I told him if the car runs 13.5 I will be happy with the build, he said it should be able to do that without even trying. It is suppose to pour rain the next couple of days so I won't be able to give a real response myself about power until maybe Sunday when it dries out. Then even that I will just be seat of the pants and testing with my phones 1/4 mile timer. No one has Ever in the history of 4.9 Fiero's tried this style of intake before so who know maybe it will turn out that this is the mod that wakes up the 4.9.

As I said previously I was actually pretty happy with the power I had before, I just wished the power curve was higher, less bottom end and more top end. The cam is suppose to have fixed that, the intake mods are just icing on the cake.
It turns out my Nitrous kit did blow a hole in the #8 cylinder head gasket seat. Which is why I kept getting air in the cooling system.

I will take tons of pics of the car and the install and Video's of testing. I have a camera mount for inside the car as well. I'll try and do some 0-60 and 0-100 runs and post up the video's showing the speedo.

Well we got through customs, and waited around, at 3pm got a call that they had not even left yet due to a delay in the person giving him a ride home. 4pm I call to find out what is going on, and find out that the car won't start due to a dead battery. I say alright well it is getting late and I said we would start heading south and meet them 1/2 way once they got the battery changed. 6:45pm, the Fiero that we were in driving down, developed an alternator issue. I manage to get it jury rigged and call FOY to find out about my car, now the car won't spin over even with a new battery. I am just about to loose my mind. I say alright, I don't trust the Fiero we are in to make it the 170 miles back to BC with the temporary alternator fix, so I will drive down to FOY help them get my Fiero fixed, then we can fix the alternator correctly in the Fiero we drove down. Well we get down there and my car is 1/2 torn apart. They say it won't be done tonight, I try to fix the Fiero we drove down, and end up putting a crow bar through the casing of the alternator. UUUUGGGHHHH. So FOY and my buddy run to the parts store at 10pm get a new alternator and by the time they get back its 11pm. I am not up for the 4hr drive back to BC if I am going to have to spend an hour getting the alternator into the 1st Fiero. So we are looking at either a hotel stay. FOY agrees to let us crash on their couch and we will go back and fix both Fiero's and leave in the morning.

Fast Forward to 10am the next day, we get back to the shop, I quickly put the alternator into the Fiero we drove down, and FOY is swapping in an Allante Starter into my Fiero. Next thing I hear from the shop is Fuuuuuuucccckkk. I go in to see what is up, the longer of the 2 bolts that go through the starter some how manages to sheer off in the block while testing it. Now for those that know 4.9 that longer bolt sits directly above the cross member so there is no way to drill it out. The only way to access that ear of the block is with the motor off the cradle. By this point, I am staying calm not getting angry, I am really really frustrated over the entire thing, and let FOY know that I am frustrated but crap happens and there is nothing that can be done about it.

So my buddy and I jump back into his Fiero and return to BC. Been gone 36hrs drove over 350 miles all for nothing.

FOY did offer to at least pay for our fuel for the trip and has offered to deliver the car to me in BC. He said he will clear it through customs and bring it right to my door, hopefully tomorrow or Monday.

With all the interest in how these 4.9 mods have worked out, I know I'm not the only one following this thread who's wondering why a second dyno run has never been attempted by FOY at some point in the last two weeks.

Being a 4.9 owner, when the next time I have to do a motor swap on the car, it's going to Archie for an LS4 and an F40.

With no disrespect to FOY, I am too wondering why a second attempt was not done, at a different dyno shop. I did see the car in person and that 4.9 is not like any I have ever seen. There were a few things that I was disappointed in, the exhaust was told to me that it was 3" turns out it is 2.5 from the manifolds through the muffler and out to the tip. The Mounts are Rubber instead of Poly, but I have been assured the rubber will last even with the nitrous being used as there is now 5 matching points.

The tires still need to be swapped out as well.

However in the end this 4.9 is like Nothing Anyone has ever seen. Just about every aspect of the build is custom, prototype parts, that were hand made by FOY. This "MIGHT" be the time that sum of the parts equals something greater than the parts alone. (or however that saying goes}

The tolerance between the intake and the alternator is very very tight so there is no way to make that any larger.

If this works, it may be the fastest N/A 4.9 on the planet. Who Knows, we Shall see when the car actually gets out and onto a real dyno.
This trip down I brought all the insurance papers and plates for the car so its totally legal to be on the road.

I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the car to be completed and driven all the way up to BC. In a way I am glad they are driving it to BC for me. It will be a good shake down run and can work out any possible bugs on the drive. With so many mods, like any major overhaul there will be bugs to be worked out. Whilst I was there I found a few things that needed to be addressed before it hits the road. FOY Discussed a few things that I wanted changed before I took the car. Things that were agreed upon to be done however had been overlooked.

I mean no disrespect to FOY there is stuff going on behind the scenes that are making work many times harder that it was when this all started. Less time and Manpower is available, so all of a sudden its a lot more work for the staff.

I am getting a special low price (still over several thousand dollars in cash and tools) for this build, in exchange he gets to test things on my build and see if they work, and if needed, take off parts and re-design things which takes more time and understandably delays the build.

FOY is trying to be accommodating to me and even offered me a partial refund (which I declined) do to the delays and things I was not happy with. My response is skip the refund just get the car perfect and dead nuts reliable. I do plan to have my 3 year old in this car, so I can't have something fail at freeway speeds and I can't have it break down on me on the freeway and be stranded with her in the passenger seat.

At one time, this car was so reliable my wife would take it on road trips to Oregon and drive it on the beach, as well as lots of high speed street racing. I want it to be that reliable again and LOTS FASTER. I want a 250kph car, (that's like 155mph for you Yankees) To have a 150mph 4.9 Fiero would be a major feather in my cap, and HUGE bragging rights for FOY Racing.

LOL, my only real worry is the Nose that Car Lo and Clynt built if it tries to rip off the car at that speed it might get interesting if it floats under the front tires.

Well I am really hoping it all works out, I am crossing my fingers that the car gets completed and tested to make sure everything is good. I would be really disappointed if this turned into some sort of legal fight. I have faith that eventually the car will be done and be perfect.

The person running it is really a great guy, just under some really unfortunate circumstances has made progress really difficult. Which is honestly why I am being so patient right now.

Oh the Road Trip was great, AM/PM Gut BOMB Double Cheese Burgers and Hot Dogs that make you Fart for Hours. Turns out a good White Ziffindale Wine goes GREAT with AMPM Burgers.

Denny's Breakfasts at 3 in the afternoon, stopped and had a lunch at a Bowling Alley that had a lounge with Curly Fries and Vodka Cranberry's. My friend does not drink, so I was able to keep a nice buzz going to stay calm.

The Road Trip part of it was a bit of a Blast. Just make sure you bring tools on the road trip.

Its a Basic Rule of Thumb, A Fiero will run perfect and the best way to make damn sure it will run perfect for thousands of miles on a road trip is FILL the front compartment with tools, and parts. Because sure as $hit, the first time you leave without your tools and parts, it will break down hundreds of miles away from where you need to be. With no one to call for help, chances are you won't even have cell service and end up walking 5 miles, then get attacked and killed by a person driving by that wants to turn you into food for the end of the world.

Moral of the Story if you plan a road trip in a 25 year old car, always bring spare parts. All the Sensors, plus Coil and Dist Shaft Compete. In our case we should have brought a spare alternator, but we usually don't carry one of those. If you don't have room for a spare tire, grab a can of spray fix a flat and use all the spare tire space for more tools. Then once your luggage is loaded in the trunk, look for the little spaces to put more tools. There is a great pocket of space behind the drivers headrest to put things as well. I usually put spare shoots up there, between the rear window and the head rest of a tent or umbrella. Don't forgot the spaces between the sides of the seat and the frame area near the E-Brake, also a great small item storage.

If you bring everything, you can fix everything and not have an issue. My wife can Re-Re a dist shaft along the side of the road, clock the cap and rotor and be done in 20 mins or less. I came and saved her a few times and she saw how I did it, then one day, called me and asked me said it happened again, so I walked her step by step and she did it perfect and now she does it on her car and friends Fiero's. Usually you can get it done faster than a tow truck can even get to you.

Bring TOOLS ALWAYS

Well More Delays.   I called them yesterday as I was hoping they would have the car to me on Wednesday, turns out the earliest they could get a dyno booked was Friday, they assure me it will be on the Dyno on Friday, they booked at 2 different dyno shops in case they have a problem with one.

Well since I last spoke, FOY has blown up another motor, and we are giving up on the dyno. He installed a 3rd motor with the cam and intake but left off the rocker supports. I finally got tired of looking at all my new parts, and decided to mock them up in the 88. WOW That Stereo is LOUD now. The new Monster Tach is great. I love the stereo and will be sad to remove it for COllector Plates.

So far I am really alive with this car. I am loving it. THis is a snipit from a tech post I just made.

Installing an aftermarket tach.

Man this was easy. Time consuming but easy.

Pull all the bolts for the cluster to gain easy access to the clear connector on the right hand side.

All 4 wires you need are there. 4 T-Taps and 4 male spade connectors then mount the tach and you are done.

I stole this from PFF.

All the wires you need are on C3- No not all PINK wires are switched power - Yes the Pink Black on pin 5 or pin 9 of C3 are switched power.

The Sub box was thanks to Fire451 the head unit was Fry's Electronics, the Amp was EBay, 4500w, and the sub was Parts Express online. The tach I got from a (believe it or not) A baby swap forum that Lisa is on for 40 bucks and it works perfect.

The box needs to go in another inch, but I am damn near going to need a porta power to push it in. I also need to replace the temporary 7mm screws that I used with some nice black screws as well as put some sort of grill over it.

I also got my new monster tach installed yesterday.

Too bad these parts are only temporary as all of it will be moved into my V8 when its done.

Ok the End of this Thread. Well for now anyway.
I have my car back.

New Delta Cam, Prototype intake, rebuilt front suspension with new tires, Northstar Throttle Body custom computer chip, and a Blown Main or Rod Bearing to go along with it all.

I am so angry and pissed, its the fact that I can't be angry at anyone over it. He spent thousands of his money trying to get this build right, He is giving me roughly a 50% refund on the total build. So I am going to have $1200 to put aside to try and fix or replace this 4.9.

The entire 15 page thread is over on Penncoks, if you want to read through.

Ok just quick update, FOY is on my unhappy Vendors list right now and as far as I know is closed down and bankrupt.

I got my car back with a bottom end knock, less than 5lbs of oil pressure at hot idle of 600rpms, a top end rattle that I believe to be from a broken rocker support beam, and engine bay damage that was the result of an engine bay fire while he was testing the car. I paid him for the custom parts and suspension work but took a refund of $1350 for the bad engine. He installed a total of 3 engines in the car and when the 3rd one proved to have gone bad in less than a week, I agreed to take my car back and go elsewhere with it.

I took part of the refund and picked up some really nice Caddy Steel Rocker Supports from California. I had to buy used as there are no NEW ones left and GM has none left in stock anywhere.   The price was fair at $170 landed to my door here in Oregon.   I should be back in BC in Mid March and will start working on the 4.9 myself to get it in tip top shape. I also picked up a trailer hitch for the car so I can tow my trailer with the big bad V8.

Well the only pics I have are of the rocker supports I bought so here they are.

Hey guys just wanted to say I have not given up on Fiero's, I still love em, and even in its crippled state I fired up the V8 and drove it around the back alley a few times. I had Tim take a video of it for me. (For those of you that don't know Tim's Fiero is no more. ICBCs first offer on the car was only 2000 he is going to ask for 3000 and hopefully get 2500 for it)

I know you guys had your meeting last night but this is what I was tinkering with. I did manage to find a wasps nest in it and they were really pissed one of them chased me down the driveway to sting me on the under side of my arm. No stinger just hurt like hell. A bit of Wasp / Hornet spray plus some After Bite for me and all was good)

Now back to my car. I still don't know what the knock is, the car has a 350rpm idle speed which leaves the oil pressure cold at 20psi, hot is 5psi. The knock is a fast enough rap and intermittent enough to make me think its a wrist pin and not a main bearing. Either way I am going to drop the pan and see what I find.

All I can do is hope for the best.

Side note I am looking for a battery for my Goldwing, I really can't justify the $100 plus bucks for a new one, seeing as I don't even know how much riding I will be doing while I have my learners list. If one of you have a spare motor cycle battery that you figure will fire up a 1200cc bike, that you want to sell for a fair price let me know and we can compare part numbers.

Well if you read this far, here is the good stuff, the Video......

So I should just do a quick update to this thread, everything with the car has been back burnered while Lisa and I are trying to figure out mortgage stuff and finding a new more permanent place to live.  With Shirleys passing we want out of this house.  We think we have found a new home in Abby and are just waiting on Paperwork.

So the car, as soon as we are moved in, I am going to order the Archie LS Swap Master Kit and I have found a few sources for the LQ4 6.0L V8.

I have loved, learned and moved on from the Caddy Platform.  Without extensive modification to the bottom end of the 4.9 Caddy motor it just won't handle the RPMs.  So a new direction was chosen.  I'll be selling off all the cu$tom parts from the 4.9 and installing an LS style motor.  Depending on how I put the motor together, it will either be 300hp or 425hp.  Which is still a ton more than the 4.9 just a bit less torque.

I'll update this thread again when I get started.

Hey Capt can you give us any insight as to why you are choosing the LQ4 engine?

This is the LQ4 with what the builder says is a cheap $209 Turbo all stuffed into a Volvo yes a Volvo, and he is blowing away Lamborghini's and new Corvettes.    The motor is used in many late model Chevy Pickups and even Suburbans.   It is a 6.0 Liter aluminum head, Iron Block and can be built to run 1200-1500hp on the STOCK bottom end.  I'll see if I can dig up the other great video of an 18 year old girl running an LQ4 in her Camaro, pulling down 9 second quarter miles at 154mph.  (0-250kph in 9 seconds)  Kicker is, the car is her daily driver, yes Daily driver.      I won't be going that nuts, but a nice 500hp in a Fiero will be a LOT of fun.

The motors can be had locally for 700-1200 Canadian funds depending on what you get with it. The turbo's are all over the map on price, but that video shows a Cheap $200 USD turbo.   The only real costly bit is the full install kit from Archie at around $3000 USD.  I have already spoken to him regarding his Master Build kit and having him go over the top and add me in an EVERYTHING kit, with full exhaust all accessories and well you name it.  I want to get the engine myself get the kit from him and have NOTHING else to buy.  When I did the 4.9 and even to a point 2.8 rebuilds I found myself chasing parts all over, trying to get this mount, or that bracket, or some obscure hose. In the 4.9 I got the mounts from one guy, the flywheel from a 2nd guy, got the exhaust via 3rd guy, misc parts came from Lordco, Napa, Alder Auto parts, Mopac Racing, and a ton more little places, it wasted so much time.  We did the install in record time at 10 days start to finish, but if we have everything on hand, I'll bet we could have done it in 2 days.   So when I do the LS swap, I want EVERYTHING.  So the only thing holding me back is my energy level and time it takes to put things together.

Well Hmm, last month she hit the 8's in her Camaro with a 6.0 liter Truck Block.  Her Turbo setup is NOT CHEAP, probably $3000 in Turbo stuff, but again the stock block. With just upgraded internals.  Seems like everyone in the LS community is talking about these motors.  They may be called LQ4's but they fall under the LS umbrella, since they use an LS Block and LS Style heads, just a different intake and Oil Pan.

The LQ4 is a truck motor. the difference between the truck and the LS motor is the truck motors are iron blocks and the LS motors are all aluminum blocks 70 pounds heave,  the head are almost the same the LS head are a better. But the truck motors will take more horse power and abuse to the LS motors. There are guy taking stock bottom end LQ4's and putting cams head work and turbos and making 1000 hp and still driving it daily.I'm putting a 2000 LQ4 and a 4l60e trans in my 77 Trans am.Thats why i haven't been doing anything with my 85 gt 3400 swap just sitting in the back yard.
