battery went dead
have a constant 11 amp drain at the battery found that when I unplug the light switch, the drain goes away subatituted a known good switch and the drain remained was goint to start checking the relays (3) when I cycled the headlights and the drain vanished!!! Problem solved...for now..but I now have to worry about a dead battery anytime!!!! Any suggestions? |

Get a kill switch just for the time being until you are
100% sure that the battery is no longer draining. I know how sucky it is to try to start a car when you're leaving work and nothing. You can either attach the kill switch directly to your battery or you can run wires so that you have it on your dash or something. Simple and cheap fix :) |

Sounds like your problem is one of your headlight motors isn't turning
off. There are contacts inside that are supposed to disconnect when the light stops up or down. Pulling the relays one at a time should show you which light is the problem. They are moderately difficult to work on. Dawg |

In the meantime (until the culprit motor is repaired), you can just disconnect the single wire that goes to each headlight motor. That will eliminate the problem of the battery draining while the lights are off and the car is parked. The headlights will still go up when turned on, but they will remain up when turned off. Not a big deal, and they can easily be manually lowered (by rotating the knob on each headlight motor) if you wish.

You did not say if this was an 84-86 or 87-88 but the 2 have drastically different systems to stop the motors. The early cars use an internal limit switch to stop the motors, the later cars have a torque style switch.
I have seen it many times on the 84-86 cars that when the car is shut off the motor will twitch and actually get hot enough to start to melt wires. I would keep an eye on the headlight motors and make sure neither gets hot. If you do find one is getting hot, pull it apart, clean the contacts inside the motor and put it back. Also as dawg mentioned this can be caused by a relay, so you might want to try that route first, but I fear it is more likely a dying headlight motor. |
