I know you can buy Gray and Black Primer, but does White primer exist. When I get my 87GT together it just dawned on me that it is going to be 3 different colours until I get it painted. I am going to need to sand and primer it regardless in order to get all the re-painted panels to come out looking the same shade, I figured I might as well, primer the panels in the final colour that I plan to paint it. Which will be Black Body with White trim. |

Awesome and even a brand I like. I have had excellent results with Plastikote. Once I get the suspension on and the car on the ground, I'll start the sanding procedure.
Thank You. |

One thing to remember... a non catalyzed paint like that - it acts like a sponge. Anything that gets on it (water, etc) will get sucked into it pretty much. This will possibly ruin your top coat. So, unless you prime it, then paint it within a very short time (I'm talking hours), it pretty much all has to be sanded off then redone.
If you just want it to be one shade - at least get a catalyzed paint or primer. It'll still need to be scuffed, but at least not totally removed, as long as whatever you apply is compatible with the top coat. |

Ok John you know enough about me to know that I know NOTHING about paint and prep, my idea of prep was grab a shop towel wipe off the dirt, and shoot it. (hopefully the shop towel was not too dirty/greasy) I thought using catalyzed paint was bad for a Fiero and made it almost un-paintable afterwords? I am really confused now. All I want to do is make the panels semi match while not ruining them for a real paint job that will be done later on. I have been told by many sources my "spray bombs" that I have been using on the car many years ago, made the panels useless. Which is one of the reasons I am changing out any of my spray bomb panels for good raw panels. I'll have to have you explain it on the phone to me. Looks like I am going to have to finish the car by Saturday night as the rain is suppose to roll in on Sunday which means no more working on it outside. On a related note, I put on the black GT bumper skin, and it is totally out of shape and does not seem to line up. Any suggestions on how to get it back into proper shape aside from forcing the skin to where it needs to be then heating it with my heater? It sat in the sun in a pile of body parts then got snowed on, then more sun, then finally I dug it out of the pile and it is twisted. I was also thinking about hooking up the Hot Water tap in the laundry room and washing it down with Scorching Hot Water to soften it up so it will re-form to where it needs to be? You think that will work. |

Right track. Heat it up (GENTLY! Hot waters OK No 40K btu heaters!) and install it. Support with whatever it takes (eg. 2*4's and rope) untill it can cool down. Just don't over do it or it'll rip.

So running hot tap water over it should do it. I have it partially installed on the car, (all the top push rivets are installed, and 3/4 of the fender liner screws are installed on one side, however currently there is no chance in hell of getting the other side fender liner screws or lower lip push rivets in.

not to really upset any one but for our plastic cars a flex agent should be added to both the primer and the colour and the clear topcoat. im sure youve all seen chipping from the smallist of impacts..... eg no flex agent in the mix. m |

Until recently, I would have agreed on the flex agent. I even ran that past a buddy who's a paint & body instructor at VCC before I shot my red car about 7 years ago. He said not to bother!
![]() Seems the paints over the years have changed, and it's really not required anymore. If you want, come by and take a good hard poke at the rear fascia on my red car where I slid out and hit the wall. It still flexes like crazy! |
