An '86 Fiero GT is a fine choice.

Yep great car.   If you are interested, I just got the offer on a 2nd one tonight, great price about $400 plus towing, locally.  Its an 86SE V6 4spd, Greater Runner, car was in amazing shape, until the owner let an employee use it on the plan he would buy it, blew a stop sighn ran it straight head long into a ditch.  Car did a nose drive into the ditch so it hit on an angle almost driving the nose under the car.   However the Engine/Drive line are in awesome shape, he acully bought the Trans from me that was suppose to go into your car.  (the previous owner to your car, was suppose to by a replacement from me and never showed up)   I sold it to the guy that ended up destroying his car, ICBC is coughing up 3000-4000 for the car.   It is a complete right off as the front sub frame is bent down completely.

Interior was also immaculate, everything looked new.   It was red, but the skins are really easy to change over.

It'll be gone quick, so PM me if you are seriously interested.

The 86GT was the first year of the fastback and did not get many of the enhancements that the 87GT however are all retrofit able.

Better headlight motors, Getrag 5spd stick, the coolant pipes in the 87 are better but requires several mods to make work and not worth it.   The headlight mod is the most important mod you can make.

Then start on performance, exhaust, ignition, plugs and such.

Again I have seen this car in person and its a great starter car, with tons of potential with some time and care.   P.S. moving to a 17" wheel makes  a huge improvement in handling and looks.

And when you go to replace those missing 1/4 windows....  Dont get the Fiero Store /Khines ones.

Dougs Fiero Warehouse is the place you wanna be.

Exceptional improvements already, brother.
Never shift into reverse without a back-up plan.
