Ok, now here's a related question. If one changed the headers to equal lengths (On the Fiero) but didn't change the rest of the exhaust system, would that still have an audible effect on the exhaust note?

Just as a tree falling in the woods makes no sound if nobody is there to hear it - a Fiero falling out of a tree makes no sound except for a moment to the driver.

Wait.

What?

Uh, yeah, it should make a change in the exhaust note.  Good?  Bad?  Personal taste.  Ditto if you change the diameter.  Echo resonance and all that.

Damn it... I adore the pleasant little burble and snort she has now, I don't want to bugger that up... I was hoping that leaving the rest of the exhaust stock was going to sort've hide the slight change.

As the doctor said, ANY thing that changes the back pressure or length of the exhaust will change the sound.  Heck even porting out the stock manifolds and putting them back on changes the exhaust sound.   So going to headers will definatly change the exhaust note.

You need to drive an old-school V8 with a lumpy cam. You'd forget about Gretchin's girly little  "burble and snort" in no time.

Gretchin is a special lady, I don't want to change her. As for the V8 sound, my other three vehicles are all V8's, the Mopar has a nice wide LSA cam in it. Still love Gretchin's voice though.

And that's awful news David...

You'd better record the sound of Gretchin's voice then, because after changing the heads, the compression ratio, and the exhaust headers, you won't even recognize Gretchin's "burble and snort" anymore.

Heads will still be running the same cam, and the compression ratio will still be fairly close to stock. As for the exhaust headers, might just keep it log headers if need be.

No point trying to convince yourself. After the conversion, she'll be sounding like a stranger in your midst.

O Gretchin, Gretchin, wherefore art thou Gretchin?

If I complete this swap and she still sounds and looks stock, I am going to print out that quote, and make you eat those words.

And if she doesn't still sound and look stock, what then?
