| hi there my names jim, i own a 85 fiero gt, but only has power windows, now i met someone thats gonna sell me his fiero that has power everything including a/c but his tranny and engine are blown, I wanna switch my engine but his car has been sitting for 2 yrs in his back yard, what are the warning signs i should look for if i switch an engine or should i just strip it and put everything onto my 85? |

Seems like a lot of work just to acquire a/c and some power options. Which car/frame has the least rust? Peel back the carpet in the trunks of both Fieros and look in the corners. I hope you're not paying much for a Fiero with a blown engine and tranny. You could've got http://www.westcoastfieros.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1245&PN=1 - This '85 GT for nothing.

| wow that car is messed,lol but yeah got a good deal, funny thing is everything is great condition except the engine, Im just hoping no rust and yeah i want this car to be something im proud to show off and if im gonan put time and money into something its gotta at least have a/c considering how hot it is here in kelowna in the summer in black car, but i will check under the carpets, hope its good then i can just part out the other car to make up for both,lol |

One thing to remember... your current car (IF it's indeed a true GT) is worth much more in the eyes of ICBC if the other one is identical, but say an S/E. |

| both are gts, just the other one seems someone put alot of work into untill the engine went, are there any threads on jsut plane swapping same engines? im new to this stuff but very mechanically knowledgable |

If they're say both the same tranny setup (4spd vs. 4spd say), you could yank his out, clean up the bay. Then yank yours out, and reconfigure it for A/C (brackets mostly), and stuff it back into his bay in a good long weekend. It's really straight forward. You need some way to lift the back end of the car up about 4ft (cherry picker, whatever). Allow for lifting about 1500lbs. There's enough threads on here, and Pennocks that you should be able to see how most other people are doing swaps. |

| any recommendations to do to the engine while its out of the car? ive changed the wires and new plugs, i know some gaskets maybe. oh and I dont pick up the car till i get home but i asked him the yr and he believes its an 88, i woul have to switch the cradle from my 85 to make the engine fit correct? |

ummmm.... hang on.... The new car is an 88? That throws a whole new wrench in the works. Biggest thing is the cradle. They're totally different, along with all the suspension and brakes. |

I think you need to post a pic or two. If your car is an 85GT and the new car is an 86GT, they should "look" totally different. As to changing from an auto to a stick, its time consuming, but can be done. I did it to my 85GT. So long as you have both cars side by side, it can be done. Converting to A/C from a non A/C car is nearly impossible. You have to gut most of the passenger compartment, most of the front compartment and and totally remove the heater / A/C box, then run new wiring, switches and a ton of other items. Now if you want to put an A/C motor into a non A/C and don't care about using the A/C its a non issue. Just drop the motor in and leave the compressor off. Its the interior wiring and bits that make it a nightmare. Hell just getting the A/C working on a car after an engine swap can be test in patience. I hope you can understand what I just wrote better than I can, as when I went back and re-read it, unless you have a working knowledge of Fiero's I probably just Short version, if you want working A/C start with a car that has A/C, if you don't care if the A/C works, don't worry about it and build whatever you want. ------------- Capt Fiero 88 Fiero GT 5spd V6 Eight Fifty Seven GT V8 5spd. |
