I never really knew how a Fiero speedo face was put together, I have changed out several clusters through the years our Fiero's even changed the odometers to match the correct mileage when putting in an odometer with lower numbers. (just trying to be honest here) Which means if someone did want to cheat the system it would be SO EASY.
I am trying out a new sleep/wake routing, Sleep 12hrs, up for 36, effectively sleeping every other night. Standard 48hr thing. This leaves me lots of extra time to play, as I don't wast 2-3hrs in front of the boob tube trying to relax before finally getting to bed. Then when you do hit the sack, you go right to sleep and sleep really well. So when ya wake up, you actully feel good. (a topic for O/T, so I'll stop here)
So as I posted earlier in this thread, I made my new super power cable, and then I decided to take a spare aux cluster apart in a Fiero just to see exactly what I need to build my new speedo face. We are moving from the 180kph to a 240kph dial. (150mph, which should be about the top speed realistically the car should go) And to all the Yutzs that say Oh Ya my N/A 1.6L from the 80 can go 240, just bugger off.
LOL, I have too much energy tonight I could go on jabbering on like this forever. So someone smack me upside the head and lets get down to business.
I think there are a lot of people out there like myself, that always thought about making there own customized gauges, but never new the "magic smoke" in the 86-88 V6 cars was really this simple. I am not talking about the electronic portion of it, but how the back lite gauges were really put together I was amazed, so amazed fact, I put them back together and took them apart one piece at a time. I used a spare Fuel Temp cluster as it was my first time taking it apart and did not want to risk destroying a good 180kph cluster.
OK front of temp / fuel gauge
Needle removed, foam trim removed
Flip over, locate tabs and gently pry the glass and metal panel apart from the base as once piece
Now you can see through the glass and see how it lights up the correct symbols. That was the point that I sat back and went OMG that is too freaking dang easy. Some transparent sheets, a good wax printer and laminate could reproduce that.
Glass / Plexi sitting aside. with face material laying against it.
Stuck to my finger, it had no more stick than barley hair spray.
Looks like the CDN 240kph gauges are going to be here much faster than expected. (got a local Photoshop expert that did the graphic, just never got it put onto face material.
I think I am going to get the cars nickname put on the speedo face. Capt Fiero above the needle and Eight Fifty Seven GT below the needle.
Which will be replacing this, Its a really old, so ignore the antique steering wheel.
