Subject: WTD 4spd Clutch Fork ASAP

    We just got Nigel’s trans out of the car and the clutch fork is destroyed we need a new one quick.   We found one on the Fiero Store for $50 NEW, but we would have to wait, hoping that someone has one or knows where to get one locally.

ouch! could be just blown release brg, also may be just bad bearing or could be made bad by riding with the foot on the clutch pedal

It pretty much comes down to a slightly crappy design.  They're made out of simple bent steel parts, welded together.  The ends fatigue and snap (after bending a bit) then all hell breaks loose.

That's gotta be the 6th one I've seen do that.

Yep, we suspect the clutch fork was bent previous, as the last shop, called and said it was bent, or damaged, then when we supplied the replacement part,  they claimed that magically it was fine.  (also told they could not figure out how to get it out)  Well they claimed to have fixed it and returned it to Nigel.  $2400 later and 18 months everything explodes apart, I finally take the time to look at it myself and find this nasty mess.

Looks like the fork failed, which took out the throwout bearing, which destroyed the pressure plate, which cost him the entire clutch.  At this point, we are going to swap in a complete new clutch and a complete new trans. (used trans)    No recourse from the shop as they only give a 1 year warranty.   

        Ah well, I should have his car back together in a few days.

Care to, ummm... mention the shop by name?

Is there actually damage to the tranny itself, other than the fork (and of course the clutch, etc)?

Mister Transmission.

First shop: 104th avenue in Surrey.

Second shop: In North Vancouver.

Between to the two shops they had my car for about 9 days.

The $2400 I spent must have been for storage.

To be honest...It could have blown up anywhere. I am really lucky that it happened as I got home.

Not that I can tell aside from some gouges in on the sleeve the release bearing sits on.   Which I am sure could be polished out and the grease would fill up the divots.  

          However seeing the bent master cylinder rod, I honestly believe they KNEW the clutch fork was toast and after getting it together and finding out that it would not release with the fork that bad, they grabbed a wrong clutch Master rod, that was too long, bent it so it would work just enough to get the car to function.  Just pisses me off to see a shop do that kind of crap/used car salesman tactic to get it out the door.    Unfortunately, its not the first and I doubt it will be the last time I get brought a car that a "so called" professional shop, has f-d over a Fiero owner.    Trust me I am the furthest from a professional shop as you can get, I just happen to know how to work on Fieros.  So occasionally, when I have some extra time, and need some extra cash, and am not working on my own Fiero's, I'll take on a job every now and again.    The worst cheats/scams/screw jobs all seem to be in relation to clutches.

lets not forget brakes, where the shop replaces EVERYTHING! just to CYA and reduce comebacks, wasteful, i shake my head

Nigel, you should call them up and let them know you'd like a chat. Head down there and show them the pics and your story and ask them if they thought they'd never get caught for the work they did. See what they have to say and if they seem to be brushing you off then perhaps ask them if they'd like to be in the local newspaper.

No shop should be able to do that, have it proven to them that they're work is sub par and not take responsibility. I would ask them for the cost of the fixes you've done this time around. Parts and hours cost of Dave's time. If they're as good as you previously said they were then they'll own up and admit to the wrong parts/not replacing parts/damaging parts so they'll fit.

At the very least, you can't lose by trying.

Yes...I hear you. I am also considering the small claims court avenue.

In a way I am glad that I have another complete transmission to have installed. Then the one that is broken can be used as part of evidence.

   Thanks to a friendly member locally, we were able to pick up a complete trans for free.  Its installed, as seen in the video link about 2 posts above this one.

I have never EVER heard anything good about Mr. Transmission. The one here in Langley on 200th had my father Caravan 3 times in 4 years for blown trannys. My father despised them. I was too young to remember why though, ha ha. I do know a guy who works there now. Used to own a 1st Gen Cavalier but now owns a Cobalt SS. He seems to know his stuff, even if he is a huge jackass.

        LOL, I know the guy you are talking about.  He's actually a good guy.  He was going to set up several of us Fiero guys with 6spds, however once we decided what the install cost was going to be for the custom parts, we gave up on the idea.  After driving a 6spd Fiero as well, I have actually decided, that I don't want a 6spd, as the ratios don't really suit my driving style.

Yup, we're both talking about the same guy, me thinks. I got nothing against him, but I can say he isn't the kind of person I'd be friends with, ha ha. I remember that same deal with the 6 spds. Too bad most of the J-body guys are cheap and don't want/need one. lol
