This idea is nothing new, as can be read about http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&safe=off&num=100&q=acetone+mpg+&btnG=Search&meta=&aq=f&oq= - in any number of websites , but I've just started adding about 2oz of acetone to every tankful of gas.
The most kilometers I've ever gotten out of a tank of (straight) gas with my '86 GT (automatic) is about 230 to 250, but it's usually a lot less (especially with most of my driving being short trips within the city). Now with the weather getting colder again, the mileage is getting even worse.
I'm sure some of you will scoff at the idea, but what the heck, I want to see for myself if this will make any difference.
Has anyone else tried adding acetone to their gasoline?

Hmm... I wouldn't mind checking this with a lawnmower engine or something that wouldn't much matter if it got damaged.

I wouldn't have volunteered to be a guinea pig if this was a brand new concept, but there are people who have been doing this for years to their cars with no ill effects.
Is there something unique about the Fiero's fuel pump (or another component) that causes you concern?

I doubt there is anything unique about the Fiero pump.
Here is a rough interchange on the Fiero pump for 88. All these cars used the same pump as the 88 Fiero. 88 pump was a bit higher flow and less noisy than the 85-87 pump, but made from the same parts.

I wouldn't have volunteered to be a guinea pig if this was a brand new concept, but there are people who have been doing this for years to their cars with no ill effects.
Is there something unique about the Fiero's fuel pump (or another component) that causes you concern?
| If water bypasses your fuel pump, that's fine, nothing happens, but acetone can immulsify water present in the fuel lines, damaging parts such as fuel pumps, injectors and even the pistons themselves. This is of course, only an issue if a sufficient amount of water present in the fuel tank to immulsify.

What is it about emulsified water that is so evil? How does emulsified water damage pistons, keeping in mind that direct water injection is not damaging to engine components in the least?

I'm not jumping to any conclusions yet, but here's my first set of figures.
I've driven 512 km (about 65% highway, 35% city) since I started this test and I've used 60 litres of gasoline/acetone mix.
This works out to just a hair over 20 mpg.
Still not great by any means, but compare that to my readings almost exactly a year ago in http://www.westcoastfieros.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=594&PN=4&TPN=1 - This thread .

This is pathetic...
1986 GT auto
199 km 100% city (still driving like an old lady)
32.555 L
199 ÷ 32.555 x 2.35 = 14.36 mpg

As I said, I'm not jumping to any conclusions yet.

| Don't think of emulsified water as water. Think of it as PISSED OFF DEMON BLOOD. lol
No, emulsified water is quite apt to absorb any formed acids, carrying them throughout the whole fuel system, and eventually delivering it to the combustion chamber. Also, not necessarily the water, but the actual acetone itself is known to be damaging to plastic compounds, albeit, the level at which it would be is questionable being a .2% mix. However your research turns out though would be interesting. My father (Used to be a trucker) has never heard of such a thing, and isn't aware of whether or not it would work, so could go either way.

Filled the tank yesterday...
180 km (about 33% highway, 67% city), used 23.5 litres of gasoline/acetone mix.
This works out to 18 mpg.
Not as good as the mileage last time, but there was a higher percentage of city driving this time around.

Yikes, my mileage took a real dive this time.
144 km (100% city driving), used 22.3 litres of gasoline/acetone mix.
This works out to 15.2 mpg.
I think what I'm seeing here is that short trips around town, especially this time of year, uses a lot of gas.

Mileage on my Cavalier 2.2L 3spd auto (well documented - not guessing!) was floating around the 24mpg mark. When I started doing 'the crawl' to work in Tilbury for 3 weeks, it plummeted with consistency to only a hair over 18!
So... don't feel alone....

Patrick before the Jan meeting, I want you to stop by here with your car and I want to take a look at a few things. Maybe pull a couple trunk side plugs and check compression, I want to personally check the timing, and look over a few things. There MUST be a reason for your poor mileage.

Dave, thanks for the offer to have a look at the '86 GT this week, but time might be a little too tight to do it in the next few days.
I'm finally almost about to bring my '84 home from Clynt's place where I've s-l-o-w-l-y but surely been converting it from a 4-spd to a 5-spd, changing the brake calipers, installing a dual exhaust, and doing a dozen other time consuming tasks. I've got to focus on this car for awhile before I can deal with the GT again.

Interesting bit of info...
In my recent http://www.westcoastfieros.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1727&PN=1 - AirCare thread , I mentioned that I had to back off the ignition timing to pass the smog test. I backed it off to about 8º BTDC and then just left it there for the last month or so.
However, I noticed my gas mileage has really taken a dive during that entire period. I worked out my last tankful tonight, which included a trip on the freeway out to Langley from Vancouver for our last club meeting. And what's my mileage been?
Just under 15 mpg!
I have now advanced my timing back to around 14º BTDC where it was previous to the smog test, hoping to at least get back up to the 20 mpg I seemed to normally be getting with that timing (not that it was much to get excited about).
I also changed the spark plug wires which I hadn't done before on this GT. It was a nuisance getting to the front plugs, so I took the decklid off to get it out of the way. The neighbors must've thought I was nuts standing with one foot on the lip of the trunk, one foot on top of the intake plenum, and lifting the decklid (with wing attached) straight up off the hinges and then placing the whole thing onto the roof (protected with cardboard). Quite a hassle, but well worth the effort!
