I've spent the past few days getting my Fiero ready for
the All Pontiac Show. I spent a lot of time getting the finish (original paint!) buffed to a high gloss shine. First I stripped off all of the old wax and stuff. Then I used a cleaning bar to get every speck of dirt off of the car. Next I applied a brand new type of polymer wax and buffed and buffed and buffed some more. The result was outstanding with a shine so deep that I could see my face in it. That's when the cats next door decided to pay me a visit. They bounded across their yard and took a flying leap onto the roof of my car, which usually is protected by my car cover. Of course, they had no grip on the freshly waxed surface so they both zoomed across the roof, down the back window, across the trunk and over the wing. Unfortunately they panicked when they hit the roof and put out their claws to stop themselves from sliding. The end result is a shiny Fiero with eight sets of claw marks, right through the the paint and running across the roof, the trunk and the wing. They didn't even stop to say they were sorry, just kept running and I haven't seem them since! Oh well,I guess there's another few days of work ahead of me, or should I just let the cats loose on the hood for a matching look all over the whole car??? That.... sucks.... BIG time.  Did it actually go through through the color layer, so you can see grey under it? If so - nothing but a repaint will fix it (as a 'hack' you could TRY some of that color restore stuff - but all it's doing is jamming colored wax down into the scratches). |

Man that sucks. However such is life, assuming its just
the wax that got scratched, I would just try buffing the area with more wax and see if it clears up. Yep I posted about the move to the softball city. OK ... calm down all of you!
I took a closer look at the damage (as opposed to the angry, quick look that I gave the car just after the cats had visited me). As some of you suggested, most of the claw marks didn't break the actual paint but rather they scratched the extra hard surface of the wax and in some cases the clear coat. On the suggestion of the manufacturer (plus of course the suggestions from you guys) I cleaned up the scratches on the trunk (I didn't want to waste time on the rest of the car if the technique didn't work), added a coat of colour match and then put a heavy application of the polymer wax over the damaged areas. Then I let the wax harden for about 3 hours, buffed it off then rewaxed the entire trunk area. It worked, with just a few of the scratches still showing (which I will try to erase during the next week). So all is well once again.
