SSSSOOOOOOOOPPPERRRR ANGRY (As David already knows)!

I went out to Pick-A-Part(y) last weekend with Patrick, where I met our lovely new couple and picked myself up a 96amp alternator. Well, today at the shop I had nothing else to do, so I popped the pulley off and gutted the internals so I could spray paint the outside with a faux-chrome spray paint. Well, that started the downhill slide into insanity.

Right off the bat I noticed there was no spring behind the brushes, so the brushes just kind of sat there limply. So, I gutted my old alternator for it's springs. Then I noticed the back brush was... Well, half gone. Whatever, I could live with a limited life span. So I continued on. Well, then I noticed that the pulley wouldn't line up properly, so I swapped around the shaft spacers until it lined up. However, once torqued, it wouldn't spin, so I had to add in even more spacers. Ok, so I got all that nonsense fixed (Whilst managing to cut myself in three different places, and busting the daylights out of my elbow) so then it was time to reassemble. Well, that brought a whole new level of frustration as nothing lined up, everything popped out of place and one of the brushes got stuck way too far down, and that meant ripping everything back down to base components. By the end of my shift, I was just trying to line it up and put it back in (Which resulted in a sprained wrist) which brought me right up to the point of wanting to hit myself in the face with a wrench. Eventually, I did end up getting it in, which would have been where the frustration ended... If all the effort would have fixed the issue. Or if it would have even broken even.

But it didn't, it made things worse, as now the alternator doesn't charge at all, and I had to limp the car home trying to avoiding using the brakes as the brake lights would drain the already low battery.

So. Unbelievably. Livid.

well I guess the next step would be getting a alt rebuild kit and doing a redo of the procedure

I feel for ya have been there before, at least your car isn't a auto otherwise you whould be doing all of that while trying to get it back in the car at the same time

I know I have to do it all over again... Which depresses me. Maybe I could just strap a solar panel to the roof instead.

Problem = Solved.

That really sucks.  Like Chris said, a rebuild kit will come with all the spare parts you will need, and if all else fails I might have a spare alternator kicking around to rob things from.

If you can find a jumper box, hook that to the car, a jumper box will keep a car running long enough that you can make it to here.  So long as you do most of the re and re, I'll help you with the details. To be honest, a full removal, rebuild and re-install should take less than 1hr start to finish.

Do you have a battery charger, go out and put the car onto charge tonight get that battery fully charged and hit the road here in the morning.  Either that or call AAA.

No AAA left, will just jump it from my mama's Jeep for a few minutes before I go. Then full throttle, no brakes the whole way there.

To be honest, might just grab a rebuild kit and do it myself tomorrow. The main problem I have is where the brushes lay, the holes to put mechanic's wire through have snapped open, so they're a skank to set.

Well, hopped and skipped my way into Lordco today (Whilst enjoying the Edmonds Street Show 'n' Shine). I went on in and spoke with the one lady there I always speak to. Asked for an alternator rebuild kit for the Delco-Remy 96amp Alternator. They didn't have any! They wont until tomorrow! And it's no longer $11, with her employee discount (Hehe, flirted my way to the absolute lowest price possible. ) it's still $18 (Normally $28!). WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

Let's get this straight - You're about to pay $18 for a rebuild kit to use on a newly rebuilt alternator (Bosch) which you bought a week ago with a 30 day warranty at Pick-a-Part for $17.95

Am I missing something here?

Patty that "newly rebuilt" alternator was newly rebuilt without some components, namely, springs for the brushes.

Well David, alternator functions fantastic. The whole car is working great at the moment. So well I kept up with an Audi street-racing on the highway. Despite her mechanical aptitude, I'll not be driving Gretchin tomorrow. Or the day after. Or for a while. See, about two blocks from my house I was randomly stopped by a policewoman, who promptly informed me I haven't had a license since March (An intriguing concept, given that I got a speeding ticket in April). She phoned in a tow truck to take my car to the impound lot. Two blocks from my house. After about a quarter of an hour of begging and pleading to just let me call a parent to drive my car home, explaining that a student's budget doesn't quite allow for a tow bill, and impound fees, she finally gave in, and my mother drove my car home while the police woman took my license.

Well, that really sucks.

HOLY CRAP THAT SUCKS.  How come you don't have a lisc?  Did it just expire and you forgot to renew? Or was this a pulled thing due to driving habbits?   Crap man that really really sucks donky balls.  Did she give you a big ticket?

I don't know yet, staying home from work today so I can speak with ICBC. I wouldn't have lost it due to driving habits, before April I never had a ticket of any kind, I'm thinking when I went in for my last Medical/Diabetes, the form was lost somewhere down the pipeline and thus someone didn't renew the license. I'm still curious to know though, having supposedly lost my license in March, how I got pulled over and given a speeding ticket without issue a month later...

She's a nice girl, you leave her alone. lol

Well, cop still has my license (And she's on vacation now). ICBC gave me another temporary one, but for some reason I was still the one who had to pay for it, even after they admitted it was their fault. I'm also still looking at a $138 fine, which can't be cancelled by anyone other than the officer who gave it, who again, is on vacation...

So, it's redundant to mention "humble" when "modest" has been stated, yet it's somehow appropriate to mention both "young" and "un-old"? Alrighty then...

Wow... Well, looks like the helmet I bought will be a waste...

Went through a roadblock the day before Halloween (Picking up the girlfriend). Fine officer asked me for license and to submit to a sobriety test (As she had consumed a rather alarming amount of alcohol, the vehicle smelled of it). No problem, I blew 0.00%, but wouldn't you know it, license came back as suspended. Again. I explained to the officer how this had happened before, and it was ICBC being they're usual useless selves... The officer apologized, saying he had to write me the ticket for now, and just to phone him once I spoke to ICBC and he'd wave it for me.

As I got home, I noticed I had a package in waiting for me. I went to collect it on the 1st. Well, wouldn't you know it - it was a letter from ICBC. Saying they'd suspended my license for three months due to me having been driving without a license from the time I first mentioned in this thread. I was infuriated, but figured I'd just explain to them how they had screwed up in the first place, and all would be well.

What a naive thought that was.

The lovely lady on the phone first denied the fact it was initially their fault, the first time I was pulled over. After she finally did check the case, she still said the license would be suspended though. When I enquired as to why this is, she told me it was because I was still originally ticketed for not having a license, ICBC's fault or not. Plus I'll have to pay the $81 ticket I got for the last ticket from them cancelling the license. Plus another $35 for another license in three months. Plus the fact I can't work in a shop or drive myself for three months. Which also means I can't attend Autocross for three months.

I can't believe that ICBC can have the gall to say yes, they screwed up, but they're still going to pull my license away despite that little fact... And charge me more on top of that! To hell with BC, I'm moving to Saskatchewan after my schooling. SGI is a saint to deal with in comparison to ICBC.

f**k man I would still fight it, take everything to court, you have the right to do that.  Hopefully the judge will have more brains than some telephone clerk at ICBC and get all the tickets thrown out of court. Heck for an $81 lisc suspended ticket maybe it won't be worth the cops time and he won't show up.

I would go to the head office of icbc and talk to some one there.talk to a lawyer first see what he says.Maybe try contacting globel news and tell them your story on how icbc is trying to screw u.If u dont fix it  they wont.U can talk to 1 icbc person and they will tell 1 thing when u call them back you'll talk to another person and they will tell u some thing else so u dont get any where with them, even do its there folt if u dont take care of the problem they an't going to fix to be nice they just don't care of your problems untill u make it a problem to them and fight for it.

She IS the next level, unless I actually take it to management, which is tempting, but regardless, I don't favour my odds fighting a crown corperation in court. Never-the-less, I don't have much other options, I need a license to work in a car shop.

A valid point. As I said though, it might just be worth it to go to Saskatchewan once I'm done the acedemic half of my course and just get re-licensed out there so I can get my hours in. Far less of a head ache.

I would suggest writing it all out in a very succinct point form and professional document. This should be sent to the same lady and also get a hold of somebody who knows where also to escalate issues. I would also get a hold of a lawyer and get some quick advice and if it's not much cost then have them send that letter out.

ICBC responds better if you have somebody representing you or you are acting and responding to the issue in just as a professional manner as a lawyer would.

Your biggest detriment is your age unfortunately. They will do their best to just duck your issues and blow you off. Which sucks. Have somebody older represent you, bring your issues to the table in writing and verbally and let them know that you are very serious about having legal representation.

What they are doing isn't legal, it's lazy. I personally wouldn't give up, just try a different tactic.

Good luck.

I agree with Graeme get a lawyer for some help.  We had another young member that ICBC gave the brush off to, and the same day he got a lawyers office to mail a letter, he got instant action and all was taken care of.
