This weekend is the club run to Whistler. It’ll be taking place on Saturday, August 21st. Dave will be along shortly with further details, but I just wanted to get a reminder out there as it’s now only five days away. [EDIT] Just a few hours now!
http://www.westcoastfieros.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=795&PN=3&TPN=1 - Here’s a link to the thread covering the last Whistler club run which took place two years ago. Looks like it was fun for everyone involved, so this year should be no different. Actually it should be even better, as all the upgrades to the Sea to Sky highway are now complete.
I originally wasn’t going to go, as I’m in the midst of dog-sitting my girlfriend’s husky for three weeks. However, Frankie was just fine when I took her to the club meeting last Saturday, so what the heck, it’s off to Whistler next for the two of us.
I’ve lived in Vancouver my entire life (54 years!) and have never been to Whistler. I’m looking forward to this!

Count me in!
I am excited to convoy with a bunch
of awesome rides! Hopefully you guys can support a fellow
with little knowledge of finding out where to go. As for a
radio are you just talking regular 2 way style? I think I
have an older motorola with 10km range...?
oh and as to the rate of speed mentioned as "spirited"...I
suggest this be determined prior to leaving as some will
obviously enjoy exceeding the speed limit and others like
myself will try not to abuse it - too much ;-). Cheers

It needs to be a GMRS radio, not the older FRS style. The club uses channel #20 while on a run.

Ok am just running out the door, so quick reply
Saturday August 21st
Meeting McDonald's just North of Trans Canada on Willingdon in Burnaby. 10am. GMRS Radios on Chanel 20.
We may make a fuel stop in or around Vancouver someplace.
Taking Trans Canada Westbound and then heading North to Whistler.
We will be stopping at Port O Cove (sp)
Then unless we have an issue with a car or get lost next stop will be Whistler, we will head straight towards the village and try to find parking as close to the main village as possible. Probably browse around and find some lunch, then do some more shopping head for the cars.
Trip down, we may stop at Shannon Falls for a quick break.
Possibly another stop for fuel / bathroom and drinks in or around Squamish.
Then head towards Vancouver. A dinner stop is possible if more than a couple people want to do that.

Dave, I admit I wasn't paying attention at the club meeting last Saturday regarding the Whistler run (because I didn't think I'd be going), but was it actually decided to wait until 10am to meet?
Two years ago the meeting time for the Whistler run appeared to be 8am (from what I read) which seems like a better time to be under way. I know for our trip to Arlington, the fact that we got a nice early start made the drive down there much more fun (with fewer cars on the road).
Not trying to cause problems, just wondering!

Yes 10am is the agreed on time. Yes it is a later start and there will be more traffic on the road. However I think the turnout will be better with the 10am start as the 2008 run, some people did not come simply because they did not want to get up that early on a Saturday.
I guess with the extra traffic there will be less opportunity to do any serious speeding, be that good or bad depending on your point of view.

Okay, well let's hope that everyone who's going actually gets to our staging location no later than 10am then so we're not waiting around even longer for stragglers.

Once we get on the Sea to Sky, traffic shouldn't be an issue as a great majority of the roads to Whistler are double lanes now. If anything we should be concerned about cops waiting around the next corner!

Michelle and I did the Peak to Peak gondola thing last year and it was fabulous! For $39.95 here:
http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/tickets/summer/index.htm
you get to ride up as high as you want and stay on either peak as long as you want and ride back down the opposite peak.
We did Whistler first which includes the very peak and then had a bite to eat at the roundhouse. Went across to Blackcomb and hung out for a little while and then a magical ride down.
I can't say enough about how cool it was. If you rushed you could probably do it all in a couple hours.
Any interest?

Heck, bring her along. If Kirsten would also be coming, then I'm sure we could find a spare seat for Mom. I've got the hound, but Tristan could use the company. Might even help keep his speeding on the highway in check.

I'll post Friday, this is my toughest week ever in business, and the presentation I have on Friday will test me in many ways, and in many ways a nice drive to clear the mind will be good:)...the rain won't be heavy, even so it's summer rain which is nice and warm:).

Ouch, really...speed limit, drivee safe, what's this talk?...lol
I brought this up last meeting as I have had several who have been to and from Whistler this summer...RCMP are HEAVY in force on that highway. The new design encourages higher speeds, they did not plan this at the time, it was all about getting people to and from for the Olympics fast...but they are getting their quotas filled...lol

70% chance of showers on Saturday reported http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/city/pages/bc-86_metric_e.html - Here , and 5-10mm of rain predicted http://www.theweathernetwork.com/weather/cabc0322?ref=topnav_weather_savedcity - Here .

Heh heh, nobody's "giving up", but driving on the highway in the rain is not nearly as much fun as cruising in the sunshine.
Plus, what's the point of going to a place like Whistler (especially as in my case, for the very first time) if the place is totally socked in with clouds and nothing can even be seen? I don't wish to drive for two hours just to walk around in the rain.
Next weekend might still turn out to be a better option, but I'm just one club member with one opinion. Everyone else is certainly welcome to express themselves regarding a possible postponement due to the weather.

Well we are right on the fringe of it. I don't want to call it just yet. When they say there is a chance of rain, it may just be in the early morning or overnight, and they are not even sure it is going to rain and even if it does they say only 5mm or so. I'd like to hear from everyone that is going. We have done runs in the drizzle in the past and had several very nice days as the rains parted in the afternoon. This run has gotten so big with so many people coming I am hesitant to cancel it. A lot of people have changed or re-arranged or stretched themselves out in order to be able to come. At this point I am still going to say its a "GO" however please keep an eye on this thread for any updates.

Yes, it is odd isn't it?
I've just never driven in that direction any farther than Squamish. (Come to think of it, I even went as far as Squamish on my 10-speed bike as a teenager.)
I guess because I've never skied, I've never previously felt the pull to Whistler. However, I'd still like to see what Whistler looks like... on a nice day.

Ok I have checked and re-checked the weather, all 3 locations, Surrey, Vancouver and Whistler at the Env Canada Site the Weather Network site and even the Weather Underground Site.
The Average forecast for the 3 sites and locations is periods of drizzle amounting to less than 5mm over a 24hr period beginning 12:01am Saturday to 11:59pm Saturday.
So unless the forecast changes to Thunder Lightning with Hurricane like winds and maybe an EOTW Asteroid shower in the mix, we are GOING.
Double check the oil in your car, the water in your coolant system, the air in your tires and if you have time give her a quick wash up.
A little weather never stopped us in the past I don't expect it to stop us know. Especially considering slightly cooler weather also means better performing engines.

Ok I revised the map again, this time I may have went a bit overboard. It has a min by min itenary of our trip, all the stops, durations of said stops both on the way up and the way down. It also includes the times Lisa and I will be leaving my house down to the min. It includes the Port O Cove Stop the Shannan Falls stop. I figure 30mins is enough time at Port O Cover and 1hr on the return trip is enogh for Shannan Falls. And 4hrs for Whistler. We can stay longer and or leave early, these are just estimated numbers so people have an idea. For Lisa and I its a 300+ KM run, so if I fill up in Surrey I should not have any problem making it there and back on a single tank of gas.
Check out my totally cool amazing map.

Everything is good here, I stripped out all the extra weight I could from the car, however trying to decide if I should remove the 2nd battery or leave it in. I am thinking I might want to overfill the oil by an extra litre just to be on the safe side in case I do any extended high rpm stretches through the corners.

Frack Frack Frack, I wanted to be on the road 15mins ago, at 8:45 and we are still not on the road. We are going to leave here Race to the gas station, fill up the car, and drop the hammer on Trans Canada to get to the McDonald's as fast as possible. I really wanted a "Big Breakfast" from McDonald's. Well we shall see how much time we end up left with.
C-Ya All Soon.

Well well well.....another great ride with the gang....eh?
We had a great time. Thanks to everyone that shared the day with us. It was nice to see you all again.
Our little notchie performed very well. It continues to impress me all the time, considering that other than the nice Toyo tires, the suspension is bone stock and over 20 years old.
During our debriefing, Michelle said it was all good except for the bit at the end. (You five or six know of what I speak). Yahoo that was fun but she was hanging on for dear life. Not much fun for her. So no more of that for me.
I was at the back for all of that last bit and man did you guys look great! The maintained tight formation at speed was cool to see. You all know your cars well that's for sure.
Cheers,
D+M

I've got 151 photos to post, yes One Hundred and fifty one. They are uploading now and I will be posting them in a few Min's. LOTS of great pics.
I have over 2 gig of Video that I need to go through and convert and then stitch together, then edit, then compress and post up. That may be a day or 2 before I get that done. However the photos will be up in a few Min's.

Ok in an effort to save people on dial up or I-Phone users from killing this thread or people with really low screen resolution, I went ahead and posted the pics in a separate thread. Feel free to reply there or here. Just be for warned, there are 151 thumbnails that load in the thread. Each one is 400x300 pixels in size.

Preface/Forward/Warning, I am almost asleep at the keyboard typing this, so please excuse any typo's or rambling or anything else. Mods if you see something wrong feel free to edit my post.
Ok guys, have converted and compressed the videos from today, they are still RAW as far as I am concerned as I have not edited or stitched them together in correct order. However the numerically order is correct. The 1st one is Brains Demo and is absolutely fun to watch. The unfortunate thing is you won't know when they are really done uploading. Pop over to http://www.captfiero.com/uploads - www.captfiero.com/uploads and check the file size on the video, wait 30 seconds and check again to see if it is changed, if its changed then it is still uploading, if it has not changed it is not uploading and you can watch it. You can either stream it locally on your computer or download it so you have a copy to keep as a keepsake. I might convert them to flash so they can be embedded in here. Don't know if I am going to go to the trouble of that though. Well have a good night guys, I have to be up for work in 5hrs. I hope you all had a blast on the run. I try to keep the FUN in my RUN's. We have a little bit of slow cruising and even walking and taking in the sites, as well as some Get up and GO on the open road. Bian was even able to show off some of his racing techniques on the corners. Me Eh I prefer to keep it in the lines, LOL. Brian you looked awesome.
Again you link http://www.captfiero.com/uploads - www.captfiero.com/uploads This is for downloading only not uploading, for uploading you must use the FTP login.

Tell Michelle Sorry...that last little bit I know I am one to talk, but I have driven that highway MANY times expecialy that last section and most of the time we were maybe 20km faster than the main traffic, still we should be more cautious of course.
It was a great time, I got home, took some meds for my back and was out like a light.

.If you mean speed limit naughty, then I would say YESSSSSS.......heheheh
Me worse though. I had a passenger that was not prepared for such a ride and I should have known better. She's great though, taking it all in stride.
I must admit, I get so involved in the driving as one must at speed, that I forget I've got a passenger.
Good times.

You want to work corners at those speeds, you need to tighten up that rear Tristan

Ouch I have never seen an 88 Caliper bust open like that. Looks it was fatigue from a bolt in the caliper that came loose, makes me want to go and check out all 4 of my calipers to make sure the parts of the caliper are bolted together tight.

Dave, I'm in the process of uploading at this moment. I created two sub-folders under my name. One has all my original shots downsized to 1024 pixels with a few cropped ones (16:9 and also 1024 pixels wide) thrown in for good measure. The second sub-folder contains shots that have all been cropped to 16:9 and left full size (large files). I'm hoping they should look pretty good when displayed full screen on a widescreen LCD display.

Johnny, in addition to posting on YouTube, you should also be uploading your club videos to the club's server so Dave can ensure they stick around for awhile.
