When you say jump around, how fast does the needle move?  If it's very fast then your speed sensor (pickup coil) is on the edge of failing.

This could be the coil itself or you could have a weak magnet making the signal low.

Take a digital volt meter and set it to measure AC Volts.  Take the cap off your distributor and unplug the pickup coil from the ICM.  While cranking the motor over, measure the Voltage coming from the coil.  It should be about 1 volt or more.  If it's much lower than that you've got a problem.

You forgot to tell me about the tach needle.....

ICM= Ignition Control Module

Also, make sure all the connections are clean.  Could be a bad plug somewhere that wiggles a bit and doesn't work.  The plug between the pickup coil and the ICM is a bad one for that.

As Dawg mentioned, the Pickup Coil is usually the fault for a code 42.  We just chased that down with Tim's Fiero.  We pulled the dist shaft, cleaned it up, replaced the pickup coil and igntion module, cleaned the hell out of everything aligned all the fingers and gapped them on the dist shaft and now everything is perfect.  Well aside from the fact that the engine is getting old, low on compression and has a rough idle due to it, however that is a whole other issue.
