Hey guys:

My GT refuses to shift into 5th or Reverse gears. Shifting into 1st through 4th is no problem. Seems like the shifter doesn't go far enough to the right. Trying to shift into 5th or Reverse becomes 3rd and 4th instead.

The car just got brand-new master & slave cylinders, as well as a new pressure plate. Any ideas/comments would be greatly appreciated as always. Thanks.

Robin

Is it the same with the engine off as on?

With the engine off, if it won't go in, then I suspect you have a linkage/tranny issue. If this happens only when you have the engine on it is likely a clutch release issue.

Sounds like your select cable is out of adjustment.  Where the cable connects to the trans axle, the hole in the arm is slotted, loosen the nut, slide the cable over a bit and re-tighten it.  Its a trial and error thing, as no car or trans axle is the same.

Thanks guys. Turns out to be quite a few problems after one another. After the master, slave, and pressure plate had to be replaced, the mechanic found a crack on the shifter assembly. I have just ordered a rebuilt shifter assembly, and a short-throw shifter for good measure, from the Fiero Store.

Hopefully, they will arrive soon so I can enjoy driving again. Driving other cars, although more reliable and trouble-free, is not quite the same as driving the Fiero!

What year was Robin's car again? 5 speeds were not available until the later part of the 86 model year.

Just wondering.

Hi Ken. My 86 GT is a 5 speed. I suppose we can call it the 86 1/2 GT then
