Subject: Steveston Pajo’s Fish and Chips run
Date Posted: 23 February 2011 at 2:53pm
This run is going to be planned by Ken.  It will happen on Sunday March 27th.  Basically a ride to Garry Point in Steveston for some great fish and chips a Pajo's.

This is a beautiful park right on the beach.  It's a fantastic kite flying destination with steady wind most of the time.  Lots of parking and more or less out of the way.

Bring some lawn chairs to relax for the afternoon before the ride back into town.

Should be a great time.

Let's hope it warms up a lot from today's weather.

Let's hope it snows again. Gretchin just loves the snow (Sarcasm).

If it snows, it is unlikely Pajos will be open. Pajo's only opens on sunny days,
especially in the winter, early spring when it is normally rather cool.

So Gretchin will be out of luck.

Oh. Well, it is my sincere hope that the snow will have given up and gone home by late March.

Yeah, especially if we're all sitting in lawn chairs braving a steady wind off the water in Steveston.

I'm working on a drive route that might be interesting. This year, I was thinking of going a similar route as last time but having a drive-through of the new Port Royal subdivision.

However, I have this fascination with tunnels and just got one of my pictures of the Massey Tunnel published in a text book.   So I'm wondering if there is interest in seeing the Cow Tunnel at 72nd Ave in Delta and maybe do a Fiero photo-shoot on Rice Mill Road in front of the Massey Tunnel and the BC Ferries service yard. Then head to Steveston via the south arm shoreline along Dyke Road. We can meet in front of Krispy Kreme at Scottsdale Mall (lots of parking) to start. The drive should take about an hour and a half to get there. We might be able to organize a photo shoot of our Fieros coming out through the cow tunnel too.

Comments?

We will discuss this at the meeting too.

As I stated on the mailing list... How could anything involving a "cow tunnel" not be worthwhile checking out, especially for us city boys? Sounds great/fascinating (and even somewhat scary) to me, Ken!

The cow tunnel crosses under highway 91. It's actually used more by cars than cows nowadays. Trucks will not fit through it so bring your Fiero.

Unfortunately, I will have to plan a different route. The cow tunnel has been
closed permanently as they construct a new overpass. Something about the
South Perimeter road.

Aw, that sucks. I probably am not quite the fan you are, but tunnels have a certain atmosphere about them that's always cool to drive in. That, and the exhaust notes echoing is awesome.

Anyhoo, count me in for the run.

Anybody interested in visiting a winery? I just noticed I'm running out of wine so might be interested in stopping at my friend's winery.   Not really much to see, but if you're interested in a tour of the place, I can get that arranged.

If it is dry, we leave Krispy Kreme at 11:03am on Sunday March 27.

We will go west on 72nd Ave to Highway 91 and turn north, over the Alex Fraser bridge to Annacis Island. Get a group shot at the new Port Royal subdivision, then head on to River Road and drive along the Fraser River north arm to #6 road in Richmond. Then to Silver City at #6 and Steveston Hwy.   Go west along Steveston to #5 road, turn left and head south to Rice Mill Road. Turn left and pull stop for a group shot in front of the Massey Tunnel. Turn around, pull into the BC Ferries service yard for a group shot. Then head back to #5 road and turn south (left) to Dyke Road. We will drive along the dyke as far as we can and then head for Moncton and parade our Fieros through Steveston to Pajos.

Anybody not willing to make their way to Krispy Kreme can meet join us anywhere along the route.

I have sent a flawed route map (Google Map kept adding addition excursions on me) to the mailing list.

Hope to see lots of Fieros come out.

Neat run Ken.  I like it.

Here's the run in a nut shell.  The exact route might be different but if you get lost it could help you find the pack quickly.

Looks like a great time to me.  Thanks to Ken for thinking it up and spearheading it.

Cheers buddy!

Hi Ken. How exactly do we determine if it is "dry" or not? What if it's overcast, damp, light drizzles or anything in between?

Only if it's dry. Cloudy is okay. If it is raining or drizzly or even thinks it's going to rain in the next 3 hours, we can huddle around in side Krispy Kreme, drink coffee, eat donuts and decide. I'm okay to drive rain or shine, but Pajo's will not be open so probably best to postpone a couple of weeks.

I will be out of town the week after so if somebody else wants to lead it, they can volunteer, or we try again in April.

So if I have this correct:

- 11:00am we meet and depart Krispy Cream?...I have not seen an agenda of sort, mixed in with text...

- Make it for lunch an hour after we fill our face with donuts

- Weather forecast is sunny with 1mm of rain...we would cancel due to this little amount of rain or are we that worried...lol, fairweather drivers:)

I will be packing up our bikes and Kerstin and I plan to stay and ride the waterfront, rain or shine:)...we need some fresh air and have walked that waterfront, biking will be fun.

Cheers

I think I'll make a corporate decision and change the contingency plan here.

The 2011 Westcoast Fieros of BC Fish n Chip run will go rain or shine.

If it rains and Pajo's is closed, we will will go to Dave's Fish n Chips for all you can eat fish n chips.

If you can't meet up at Krispy Kreme at 11:00am,  there will be some meet up spots we will pass.

- Annacis Island traffic circle just south of the swing bridge.
- Starlight Casino entrance intersection at Boundary Rd and Westminster Hwy
- Park/bathroom stop on River Road just west of #7 Rd  (where we stopped last time)
- Silver City entrance on #6 Rd
- #5 Rd entrance to Ironwood Mall

These are places where we will stop briefly to make sure we are still in a group together and not scattered all over the lower mainland. Being we are in an urban environment, we will NOT be doing any highspeed open-er-up type runs on this drive.

Hope to see you Sunday

Well, we're on for this morning.  The weather looks good.  Don't forget to fuel up before going.  I don't think you'll need a full tank, but at least have half a tank of fuel.  Fiero tanks are small.   Only gas stops along the way I can think of are at Scottsdale mall, where KK is, and at the corner of #5 and Steveston.

See you there.

Man what a perfect day for the run...eh?  Sounds like you all had a great time.

As for our attendance Brian, till we get the engine rebuilt I don't think we'll be going to any runs.  2 more job interviews tomorrow and who knows, maybe we'll have more cash to get it all done.

Thanks again to Ken.  Great run.

To tell the truth, I was secretly hoping that it would be pissing rain today so that this run would possibly be postponed to a later date . Had to work all day....

But Iona Park by YVR is such a great place to be on a sunny day for sure. I work at the airport, so I hang out over there all the time. Only if we can take our Fieros out on that pathway (the gigantic sewage pipe) into the middle of the sea. The gravel road over the pipe is unfortunately for service vehicle use only. If we feel adventurous, we can probably speed out to the end and back before we get caught (it's about 8 km return trip) .
