As was discussed in another thread (The Bomber), the Fiero has a pretty distinctive note. In honour of that lovely gurgle, I think we should find someone with a decent audio recorder and record various Fieros, especially those with modified exhausts, and engine swaps. Then, we could upload the audio files up here and on youtube to enjoy. Anyone headed to Hell's Gate have a decent recording device?

Wait a minute!  The old Patrick had a back yard full of Fieros and the new Patrick has none.  The black helicopters should be landing any moment now....:)

Yeah, yeah, yeah...

I returned from a week long trip to Montreal last night (where I didn't see a single Fiero the whole time), and I'm now ready to reclaim my title as the one and only Patrick in this forum/club. Kevin, take a hike.  *

* Relax, it's just a joke.

Of course - Nothing like a bit of Friendly Encouragement.
to stir the brush. Thanks for taking over once again, I
was no where near capable of filling your shoes.
Especially now that I no longer own a fiero.

Cheers

PS - Everyone sure missed you Patrick.

Sorry. I'm busy this weekend. I'm scheduled for my weekend occupation. Fiero club meetings and events are 3rd in line of my weekend priorities between family and my other weekend gig or running soundboards....I don't do this every weekend though.

Ken, I'd like to hear more of what you do with soundboards. Where, what, when, etc.

Ok I tried today to record the sound of my exhaust today
but the sound of the vacuum leak was overpowering the mic
or something. Once I have that sorted I'll try again
tomorrow.
If it's still an issue I'll just chalk it up to a REALLY
growly exhaust! ^_^

lol

I look forward to hearing it. If I find the time, and have sufficient audio samples to work with, I might incorperate these in to something else I've been playing around with.

Someone bring an iPhone to the next club meet!

I'm part of a group who run the sound for Saturday services and sometimes Sundays and sometimes rehearsals and other events.

Wow, I didn't realize churches were now so hi-tech.  Whatever happened to the old days when people who were hard of hearing simply sat closer to the pulpit?

Why be limited to just audio... video FTW!

My experience last year at a couple of autocross sessions, was that for the best audio recording of the engine/exhaust sound, the mic needed to be located by the rear license plate. Not only did this pick up the audio you wanted to be recorded (ie engine/exhaust, screeching rear tires), but it also eliminated the audio you didn't want to be recorded (ie keys/keychain rattling around, gawd awful wind noise, etc).

A stereo recording device would be best, but here's what my $10 spycam with mono audio recording captured last September at the Corvette club's autocross with my mighty duke (dual-exhaust, gutted cat). Crank up your volume!

Audio is good for me because it saves me th trouble of stripping away the video when I put it on my iPod. And it also makes the file smaller to edit on Audacity.

Well, the main point I was making was that the best place to record what we want to hear is from the back of the car by the rear plate.

Portable standalone stereo audio recording devices such as http://www.zoom.co.jp/products/h4n - This are really nice. Who's got one?

Whatever device is used for the recording, it's not a big deal for the end user to do a file conversion to suit their needs.

A perfectly valid rebuttle. I believe both Ken and Kevin have attested to the recording qualities of the iPhone, albeit, I suspect it is probably not stereo... Regardless, I think it should sound wonderful.

Alright then, someone make a bracket to attach an iPhone to the rear plate location of their Fiero, and let's hear how it sounds!

Well, you don't want the device to rattle around at all, otherwise you'll get all kinds of noise you don't want.

I used hockey tape to hold my spy cameras in place. The tape held well, but it was difficult to aim the cameras exactly where I wanted. That's not as much of an issue with audio-only recordings, but it's something to keep in mind for those who wish to shoot video as well.

Honestly Tristan, that's a lousy way of doing it. So many guys post YouTube videos of the back of their cars parked in the garage while they rev the crap out of them.

I want to hear these engines rev while under load (like on a dynamometer). That sounds completely different (and better) than some engine being floored while just sitting there freewheeling.

My Canon SX10is camera records sound in stereo. It's not HD video, but it should be good enough for our purposes. I will bring my camera and a tripod to the meeting tomorrow and maybe we can do a few "drive aways" after the meeting.
