Who uses tapes anymore?

Having said that, I was surprised to find out that those http://miahz.com/2006/02/review-monster-icarplay-cassette-adapter/ - cassette adapter things that stick in where the tapes go that you can then plug into the audio-out of portable CD/MP3 players won't work if the tape mechanism inside the deck isn't turning. Usually the drive belt inside has turned to goo or carbon after all these years.

You sure? The old adapter I used to have only had like three inches of "tape surface" to use, so I can't imagine it lasting to long if it were being turned...

Never shift into reverse without a back-up plan.

Yes, I know this for a fact.

The cassette deck needs to "think" that there's a tape actually moving through it, otherwise it turns itself off.

Click on the link I supplied in my last post and look at the picture of the inside of one of those adapters.
