Thanks for taking over Colby...I hope to make it out a few times this year, if not at least in the Mazda

No problem, I'm excited for the autocross season to start up again and hoping to see some Fieros out there.

I put my summer tires back on today and it's amazing how much the car changes just from that, it feels like it's ready to autocross again. There's one last slush series event happing next Sunday and I'm probably going to go. Re-watching some of the videos from last season has really made me want to get out there again.

OK, I'm officially registered to attend the last slush series event. Apparently there's some more paving going on so the useable pad is only going to be 1.5x the size instead of 2x, but it'll be my first time seeing it.

Well, today the weather was good and i drifted over the the skid pad to see what i could see.

3 Fieros were there!

Looked like fun was had by all!

the skid pad was very large and the potential for speed was there but technical elements kept the times pretty even (all in all)

here are a couple of shots:

The new car did well. I had an unexpected co-driver and the car handled the extra stress well. The extra power was really nice for a course like we had, there were 4 points on the course where I could reach 70km/h or more and a tight zig-zag at the end which would have been really tough for my old iron duke. Surprisingly challenging course, I tried a bunch of different lines in the afternoon but wasn't able to beat my best morning time.

The new, wider, skidpad is great. There were 85 drivers out there but I still got 8 65-second runs. I was worried with so many people that I'd be waiting around a lot more than usual, but it actually felt more like it does when there's 60 people on the old pad. With no overlap, they can launch a car every 40 seconds or so and you end up with 2-3 cars on course at all times. As a worker, it's not much different except you end up red-flagging a few more cars than usual if there's a spin or something.

Here's a video (I'm trying out some software which overlays data collected by my phone and an external GPS):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2hMH3hky7c - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2hMH3hky7c

I'm a bit rusty from not autocrossing for 5 months and found myself turning late a lot of the time, but my first run wasn't too far off my best.

Results are here:
http://www.ubcscc.com/events/2011/slush7/T.TXT" class="postlink - Top Overall

http://www.ubcscc.com/events/2011/slush7/R.TXT" class="postlink - Complete Results

And the other people with Fieros were Charles and Sean from Washington. They brought out a stock, low mileage '88 GT and I think Blair's old 85 3800sc.

I'm using my phone for everything, using an application called http://trackmaster.trackaroo.com/welcome - Trackmaster . I connected my phone to a 5hz bluetooth GPS for better accuracy, but I did try using the internal GPS in the phone and that still gives some fairly usable data.

One of the neat things that program does is synchronize between a website, so you can share the data from your run. http://www.mytrackmaster.com/#SessionPlace:ag1teXRyYWNrbWFzdGVychoLEgRVc2VyGMf4QAwLEgdTZXNzaW9uGJdODA - Like this.

That video with the associated overlay looks great!

This may or may not be a dumb question, but is it necessary for a suitable android phone to actually be on a network for this setup to work? I don't use a cell phone, and I have no desire to use a cell phone (as a phone), but I might be interested in getting the proper hardware/software just for the capability you've demonstrated here.

Second part of the question - If the phone (when used on its own) does need to be on a network, would it still need to be on a network if a separate GPS device was used (as you did) to track movement?

What this boils down to is I'm wondering if monthly cell phone fees would be required just to use this setup for recording autocross events two or three times a month.

I'm not really sure. It should be technically possible, but who knows what kind of limitations they've put on the phone. At the very least, the accelerometer definitely wont need any network, and a bluetooth GPS can work all by itself. But even with that, it's possible they might not let you buy the software without having the phone on the network.

You don't really have to use a phone though, so long as you have a video and can collect data and get it in the form of a .csv file, you can create a video with the overlay using software on your computer.

Can/does a stand-alone GPS device create and store a .csv file?

I'm sure there's one out there that does, but I don't know of any specifically. You'll be missing out on acceleration figures that way, though.

I'm wondering if anyone from up here is interested in the autocrosses being held down in Bellingham, Washington.

Charles and Sean (whom some of us have met) participate in these events.

April 14th – Autocross School http://www.chuckanutscc.org/autocross/autocross-2012/autocross-school-2012 - More Info
April 15th – Championship Event #1 http://www.chuckanutscc.org/autocross/autocross-2012/read-me - Register
May 13th – Championship Event #2
June 2nd – Championship Event #3
June 17th – Annual Father’s Day @ Mt Baker
July 14th – Championship Event #4
August 11th – Championship Event #5
September 8th – Championship Event #6
October 13th – Championship Event #7
October 14th – Invitational, Event #8

There is surprisingly very little conflict with the dates of the local autocrosses being held at Pitt Meadows.

Maybe. There are a lot of local events from April to July, but not a whole lot after that, so I might be interested in going then.

One thing I wanted to bring to everyone's attention in case it wasn't too clear is that the $25 fee for the Autocross School on Saturday, April 14th includes the yearly membership fee which is required in order to participate in any of this season's autocrosses put on by the Chuckanut club.

In other words, the Autocross School is basically free for anyone who wishes to participate. (I double-checked with mailto:autocross@chuckanutscc.org - Alex Crocker  of the Chuckanut club.) A basic lunch is even provided!

I think this is a great way to check out the track and the cars and the people down in Bellingham!

And look at the weather forecast for the 14th...

There are no conflicts with any events up here on the 14th. This could be a fun day.

Yeah, it's a bit further than Pitt Meadows for sure, but heck, it isn't that far away.

I'm willing to see how it goes on the 14th. If it appears not to be worth driving the extra miles and crossing the border etc, I won't bother repeating the journey. However, I'm hopeful that it'll be enjoyable enough to want to participate in future events.

I certainly have no plans to go to every autocross down there this season (as there are plenty of events at Pitt Meadows), but a trip to Bellingham two or three times over the course of the summer (in addition to the local events) should conceivably add to my overall enjoyment of the sport.

I just wish the Mighty Duke was more... well, more mighty.

Damn... I just got an email from Alex Crocker of the Chuckanut club telling me that the autocross school and the first scheduled autocross event have both been cancelled because the lot they use (for the track) has been taken over by another group.

That sucks, I still need to do some sort of sutocross school.

I miss autocross, but the wait will be worth it once I have the 5-speed done.
