I am new to the fiero world. I have always loves the little car and
recently I picked up a very clean 87 gt. I have been looking and
researching motor swaps biggest one I found is a 3800 sc motor. Now
I'm not sure what all is involved especially since I want a manual tranny
with it. I was thinking of a different motor and would like some opinions
on the plausibility of the build. I was thinking of dropping (if possible)
the 3.5 ecoboost into the car stock motor of course but still what do you
all think of that type of swap?

LOL, just give it time for people to respond.  Our forum is not as quick as some of the other ones on the net.

There are really 3 or 4 good swaps, but the 2 most popular are the 3800SC and the 4.9 V8.  More high dollar swaps like the SBC V8 and Northstar are good too if you want to spend around 10,000.

There are also many other swaps like the 3.4 Camaro or the 3400 Aluminum head swaps.

 

      If you are interested in the 3800SC we have 2 great forum members Car2Lo and Harrison both that drive 3800 swap cars, Harrison will be at the club meeting in Langley this month as well.  There are a number of build threads on both cars so dig around and see what you like.

         I personally own a 4.9 V8 Fiero 5spd.

Just out of curiosity is the fiero really that fast with a 3.8 sc. 12's with
240 hp impressive just wondered what a fuel efficient 385 tr v6 would
be like

LOL, not exactly 12's with a stock 3.8 SC, more like mid to high 13's its when you change the pulley, headers and custom ecm you can run 12's.

I'm biased but I would recommend a 3.5L LX9 swap. I have
about $2000 into mine now and I'm quite happy with it.
I'll be taking my car to a 1/4 mile in a month and am
expecting mid-14s. With a can these engines are easily
capable of 13s in a Fiero.

This is coming from a Ford mechanic: Don't try and swap in an EcoBoost. There is sooooooo much work involved, the exhaust is virtually set-in-stone, the sensors connect to almost everything in the car (Rollover sensors and airbag sensors, for example, don't exist in a Fiero), and of course you'd need to find a transmission that'll hook up to it and get that all wedged in the back. To make that engine work, you'll be replacing virtually every part of the drivetrain, several interior bits and pieces and several handling-related bits. The sheer expense of it all means you'll be blowing more money than what you could drop in a LS7 in for, and you'll still be making less power.

Damn never realized it had all that hooked up to the computer and I
guess you really can't tune it out can you? One of the reasOns I was
looking ecoboost was for lithe power but also the fuel economy that
motor should do in that car. I know it's asking a lot but if I can put down
good power and still pull 30 mpg I be happy as hell

If all you want is 30mpg, that is actually fairly easy.  My 4.9 V8 5spd Fiero would get 34mpg on the highway and mid 20's if driven in a sain manner in town.  It would dip to about 12mpg if I had my foot to the floor with the tires up in smoke drifting sideways through intersections.    A 3800 S/C swap will also net you 30mpg with the 4spd Auto, I don't know if the 5spd Fiero trans is tall enough geared but it should be, if not the 6spd trans will easily net you 30mpg on a 3800 S/C Fiero.
