Hello all. Im new to the fourm. My 85GT 4 speed is on the Fritz. I tore the tranny apart and found out I have a broken Syncro Hub for the 1st and 2nd gear. I tried everywhere to locate one. GM dealer says no GM dealer in Canada has the part. Alot of transmission websites dont seem to carry parts for the 4speed. afew websites down in the states have the part I need. But they dont accept payment and ship outside of the US.
That leaves me to looking at the auto wrecking yards. No one has any fiero in there yard it seems where I live. (Vancouver Island, Nanaimo) They have a tranny from a Cavalier but they want almost $500. which im not willing to spend. If anyone has a 4 speed they are selling. im interested. I dont mind if its a 5 speed. just aslong as it comes with a shifter and shifter cables.

F23 5-speeds (from 00-02 Cavalier/Sunfire 2.2) can be had
at a wrecker for IIRC around $2-300 and they're supposed to
be good transmissions, however the mount and shift cable
setup is different. There is someone on fiero.nl selling
swap brackets though.
There's a guy parting out a Cavalier in Vancouver who told
me he would sell the trans for $80, but I'm also on VI.

I would recommend the F23 if you're up for the work. You need to make mounts, shifter brackets, clutch line adapter, custom cables, although I think you can make stock ones work. But axles and clutch would be the same.
I believe you can buy all that stuff online now, mostly from pennocks (fiero.nl). Pick-a-part here in Chilliwak charges $95+$20 core for any transmission.
I have a thread somewhere on here about my F23 swap.
Edit - transmissions are on sale for $50 right now.

FOY Racing in Roy Washington sells the install kit. Its not cheap, but the F23 is far superior to the Getrag if you want to go with a 5spd from what understand you can LSD kits and different Ratio's and all sorts of cool stuff for the. FOY is rebuilding my 4.9 Fiero for me right now. Should be done in a few more weeks.
Here is a link to their thread with the kits on PFF.

i saw that kit. there was a trans from a 2000+ cavalier for 200. came with a engine that had a knock. then i looked up the install kit. it be over $400 just for the brackets and such by the time i get it to my door. As of right now. im in the process of moving into a new place. I have to be out by the end of november. so im just putting my tranny back together and throw it back into the fiero for the time being till i can find a replacement.
Does the auto wrecker have a website? also do you happen to know if there is any fieros in there yard? I really dont want to make a trip to the mainland if i cant help it. its starting to seem like i just might have to if i cant find anything here soon.

thank you. ill give it a look threw.
im just searching ralphs recyled automotive inventory search. they have a 1987 fiero. looks like it got hit on the passager side door. i cant tell if its a manual or an auto. there is something blocking the center part of the fiero in one of the photos. im pretty sure its a 4cly.

pick a part website says they have a 87 fiero. could be the same one possibly as ralphs? anyways it says its a standard. it will be the 5 speed mated to the duke. ill give them an email asking if they have it. not bad for 49.95. I dont drive my car hard so that tranny will be just fine.
If anyone is stopping by there anytime soon. would one of you fellow mind giving it a quick look to see how it is for me?

I believe the fiero at pickapart has a V6 in it. It looks to have been someones project car at some point, there were quite a few other spare bits in there as well, but it was still pretty picked through when I was there in the summer.
Ralph's is also quite a bit more expensive than pick-a-part I find. And it's not nearly as nice.

Whenever I get around to doing an F23 swap, you can have my
4-speed for free. I live in Victoria. I probably won't be
doing it until January though after my current project is
running.

Since the car will probably be down for a couple of days
and I still need to gather parts, it definitely won't be
happening till late December at the earliest. Right now
I'm dumping all my money into the 3500 Turbo Firebird
project :D. That being said the cost of an F23 swap will
be significantly less than what I'm doing to the Firebird
so I probably won't need to save too much money for it.
If you have a 5-speed shifter and cables I'd be interested
in purchasing them.

Hey are you the one who installed an OBX LSD in yours? If so, how
does it perform?

Sorry I do not have a 5 speed shifter and cables. I do however have an extra engine cradle from an 86 fiero. Im keeping that for my 3.8 swap. when ever I get around to do the swap ill have the cradle in my 85gt i wont be needing anymore.

Yes, I put the OBX LSD in my F23. Ir works great, and made a noticeable difference during autoX.
But if you do go with an OBX, take it apart, clean, smooth, debur, finish, and rebuild it properly before installing it. I replaced all the hardware in mine just to be safe.

Hey I don't know if you still need my 4-speed but I've been
gradually gathering parts for my F23 swap and all I really
have left to buy is the trans, clutch, and shifter. I
should be ready to do the swap either by the end of this
month or the first half of Febuary. I ended up getting a
great price on a new OBX LSD as well so I'm pretty excited.
Firebird's keeping me occupied right now. I just have to
build my downpipe, intercooler piping, and 1.5 motor
mounts. Pretty much everything else is done. Oh and re-
shim the diff :)

Josh;
I just went through the Chilliwack Pick a part site and see they have an Audi 5000s with manual trans there right now in row 77. I need an 016 trans
for a longitudinal setup in my 355 project I want to do.
I will
call them tomorrow to see if they pull parts and send to me
but if not, would
you be willing to pull the trans for me?
I am over in Victoria
so can't get over there very easily any more now that I am not coming
over weekly for work. I pay for the trans and I have a 4 spd Isuzu for
trade for your labour and time if you are willing to go grab it for me....
I
would pay for getting it across on the ferry through greyhound or
whatever as well. Or pick it up next time I am on the Mainland....and I would have a 4 spd Isuzu that works great for you as a trade for your effort. Or maybe I grab the 4 spd and come across to let my wife shop while we exchange the trans.
I have a Getrag that I would pull from my 355 and put into my 308 replica and then have the Isuzu to give to you as a trade. 4 spd is in really good shape and the car runs very well and shifts easily.
Thoughts? Thanks Don

I think Josh is in Nanaimo which is why he wanted my trans (I'm in
Victoria, so kinda local).
That being said, if someone is willing to go to the pick-a-part for me as
well and pull an F23 for me, I'd be willing to double the cost (I think they
charge $125?). Cheapest one I can find local is $400 which I might end
up getting anyway.

Ah OK;
My mistake. I thought Josh was on the mainland. Bummer.
Oh well, next time I am over there, I will have to take my workin' clothes and see if I can drag one out of a wreck.
Thanks Don

You mean you might be able to grab me an F23 as well? According to
their website they have several with the right bellhousing (00-02
Cavalier with 2.2L engine). I'd be willing to pay $250 for a good one.
If that's the case let me know when you're going. I'm hoping to have the
trans by the end of the month if possible

Yeah, probably no by the end of the month unfortunately. Sorry. Doing a bit of traveling right now until the end of January so won't be looking at going over until late February earliest and getting a bit old to be crawling around under a wreck in Feb......
I will keep an eye out for you down here in Vic and see what can't be done to get a trans for you.
Nothing on the island at any of the wreckers that you could call and see?
Cheers Don

I've posted a wanted ad, called some wreckers, and looked
on www.car-part.com. Maxwell's has the cheapest on the
island I can find at $400. It does have lowish mileage
though.

This is from an 84 4 banger. Anyone know if there were any differences between it and a v6 model (ratios etc)?

IIRC the 4-cyl case is weaker, but the internals are the
same so if the OP has a V6 it's probably best to swap the
internals.
