Normally I would've posted this a few days sooner, but I've been rather distracted since last Tuesday with a painful sprained right wrist. However, the drugs (Ketorolac) are doing their job, and I anticipate being able to participate on Sunday. However, this would be a great opportunity for Tristan to come out and try to beat the Mighty Duke. I may have to shift with my teeth, but I'd be ready for the challenge.

I originally was also going to have my girlfriend's 16 year old daughter (Alannah) come out and co-drive the Mighty Duke at this event. But I think she's just a little bit too inexperienced to try it yet. She's only driven on city streets a handful of times, and at this point she's only driven a manual tranny once. Might be a little bit too much pressure on her to drive on Sunday, but I believe she and her mom (Anne) will be coming out on Sunday to observe. You all have my permission to take Alannah and/or Anne out for a spin at the track and scare the bejesus out of them.

So I've finally purchased a new set of tires and I'm hoping that they'll arrive at Ship Happens before the weekend. This may be the first event I use them at, otherwise, I may end up co-driving my dad's car.

Patrick, is your wrist now well enough now to drive?

Yeah, I drove for the first time on Monday and took my dad grocery shopping. My wrist has now been a little sore since then, but it's not bad. I expect to be ready to rumble on Sunday.  ...although I'm not looking forward to swapping over to my track tires/wheels on Saturday evening.

I had my choice of tire narrowed down between two of them, but the day I went to order I noticed a brand new tire in the same category ( https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Bridgestone&tireModel=Potenza+RE-11A&partnum=25VR6RE11A&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes - here ). They're an updated version of what Brian just bought. I remember the previous version being far more expensive than similar tires, so I suppose they've lowered the price to be more competitive. The reviews say that they're more tolerable for daily driving, being a bit quieter and pretty decent in the rain. Realistically, I'm too lazy to swap tires, and I do far more driving between autocross events than at the events, so it seemed like a good choice.

One thing I sometimes do when swapping over tires is to only raise the car just enough to slip the tires off. It makes it a bit easier when you don't have to lift the wheel up as far.

I didn't know you had 16" wheels. Or I knew but I forgot.

Any pictures of them on your Formula?

Excellent!

Any links to images of these wheels... or do you want to wait 'til they're on the car before we see 'em?

Let's wait and see what they look like on the car. They're not really anything special, though.

Now Gary, stop that. I need Colby to help me with the upcoming project... so behave.

I just finished registering and I noticed something odd at the Karelo site. It's obviously a misprint, but I'll bring it to Rich's attention.

Alright, I'm registered and the new tires are on the car. We're currently also trying to fix an exhaust leak and other issues with the exhaust system before Sunday. It hasn't been very nice listening to it for the last few weeks.

Harrison, hopefully you still remember what you learned at Autox 101.

Brian, if I wasn't still getting over this sprained wrist, I would've come over and either helped you or done it myself. You need to be at autocross (if not this time, then next time for sure).

I wanted to do some light mechanical work to ease my wrist back into shape, so I decided to try http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/103494-2.html#p45 - shimming the rockers in the duke to make it sound less like a diesel when it's idling. Hope I get it back together on Saturday.

Interesting idea... if I still had my Duke I would definitely have been interested in trying out that idea. It's a noisy engine.

Yep, I got pretty much the same tire as you. It's an updated version of the RE-11 that looks pretty much identical. It's the Bridgestone Potenza RE-11A in 225/50R16.

I hope I didn't screw something up. When I got things back together enough to run, I started the engine. It ran really rough and oil shot out of the breather on the valve cover (that normally is plugged into the horn of the air filter can, but I had the whole air filter assembly off). I'd say at least two tablespoons of oil gushed all over the top of the valve cover.

After I cleaned up the worst of the mess, I started the motor up again. It continued to run rough for a couple minutes (with quite a loud "tapping" sound for a minute), but at least there was no longer a geyser of oil coming out the top. The engine eventually got smoother, but it still has somewhat of a rough idle. The engine now actually shakes back and forth a bit at idle, which it never did before. It seems to rev up okay, and I drove it around the block and it seemed alright... but it still idles oddly.

I don't think the thickness of the shims would be any more than perhaps .030" or so. I doubt this is enough to prevent one or more of the valves from seating correctly. However, when re-tightening the rocker bolts down, the valves were being opened quite a bit as the hydraulic lifters didn't seem to be compressing at all from their fully uncompressed state. So I dunno...

If I don't make it to autocross tomorrow, you'll know I've messed up something.  Hopefully I don't end up on the side of the freeway on the way there.

Harrison, that too close to Patrick, you need to spank his ars

Happen that my drivers window motor is acting up and I would not have been happy on a day like today to have it up...have a new motor and John and I are doing the door pins, hand and the motor tomorrow...been wanting for years to get the door pins done.

Hey Brian... although it's very difficult to tell with the awful way they did the timing sheets, it was me who spanked both Harrison and Colby today. Who says anyone needs more than 90 HP?

I just got home (stopped off at my dad's) and I've yet to review my videos. Sometime tonight I'll post the fastest Fiero run of the day.

It was a fun event. The course was interesting and challenging to get right, and the competition was good. I managed to get through the day only burning the back of my legs (still, ouch).

The tires were pretty nice. My old tires were definitely comparable though, and I know now that they weren't really holding me back as much as I had thought. I'm still learning what the new tires do and don't like, but so far they seem to have way less of the drawbacks of my old Falkens.

They seem to handle transitions between different elements a bit better, as well as letting me go a bit quicker in the slaloms. Unlike the Falkens they don't seem to get slippery as they heat up, although I think they like a bit more pressure. When I had the pressure down to about 31 PSI they began squealing a bit more, but it's also possible I was just driving the car a little harder. When it comes to overall grip in the sweepers, I do think that the same size Falken RT615Ks would do a little bit better. But in my case, the RE11As are definitely better than my warn out and narrower Falkens.

My last set of tires were 23" in diameter whereas these new ones are about 25". I did notice a difference coming out of the corners. With the RPM being a little lower, there wasn't as much power available. Still gotta more than whatever Patrick had, though.

For the daily driving stuff, the Bridgestones are so much better. They give less road noise and are a bit more comfortable. I still feel every little pebble and crack, but it's not as evident.

Patrick was saying that the new wheels really improve the look of the car, and I have to agree. I think a few more people noticed the car at this event than previously. I mentioned that my last set of tires for my 14" rims only costed me $400, and even though it looked silly, I still think it was a pretty viable and cheap way to get performance rubber.

Here are a couple videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAQeSVLzh78 - This one is of my fastest clean time (with GPS data). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kouD2YxDAR8 - This one is my fastest clean time vs. a time with 2 cones (one in end slalom, not sure about 2nd). Watching the comparison video, I think that if I hadn't done a bit of a slide I would have been at least a second faster than my current best time.

Tristan keeps phoning and emailing me to post my video. Geez, I wish he would just come out to the track!

3D video (2D also available) of my best time today... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlwMtiBCkJY - Here . Not the smoothest run, but it's a learning process that never ends.

Harrison did great considering that it's been a while since he's been out, and he's also using street tires.

I think Colby will do better next time when he learns to trust his new tires a bit more. I haven't watched Colby's videos yet, but I'm curious to hear how hard he's pushing his car.

Gary was getting frustrated, but he pulled it together at the end.

It's a lot of fun when there's a core group of us egging each other on.

One of these days I am going to have to get some proper tires. I can tell they are at the edge of their grip far too often. expecially when comparing to your runs and hearing hardly any tire squeal.

On the plus side, I seem to have not hit a single cone all day. The ~85 second run included a full spin, and my last DNF is when i got distracted by the orange line Patrick left behind for us through just about the entire course

I haven't had time to get the videos up yet, but soon.

Guess what, I just happen to have that run right https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1qhbf9J-q8 - Here . Warning, language not suitable for children!

You'll notice at the 29 sec mark that I went on the wrong side of a pointer cone. (Hey, it was my last run... I was hot and tired.) That then screwed up my line which directly led to me driving right over top of a cone in the sweep. The damn cone remained stuck under the car for the entire journey, no matter how hard I tried to dislodge it! I figured if it wasn't going to fall out, then I'd just grind it down. Great sound effects of the cone being dragged along the asphalt. It ended up nestled right up againt a very hot catalytic converter. Not a pretty sight!

lol Patrick.. that's some cussin' you had there..

i like the 3D but the dash reflection in the window is a bit distracting.. being so close and all..

Colby looks rather relaxed.. until the tires start making some noise somewhere in the middle of his run...

Yeah, at certain angles of the sun, the reflection of the dash on the inside of the windshield becomes a definite nuisance. I suppose I can try a different mounting spot for the camera, but I'm also trying to avoid a location where wind noise becomes a problem.

The videos that both you and Colby shoot usually have a heck of a lot of wind noise due to the fact that your roof panels have been removed. I much prefer to hear engine, and to a lesser degree, tire noise (and cussin' and dragging cones) rather than what sounds like nearby tornado.

Posted By: Patrick
Date Posted: 15 July 2013 at 5:18pm

This is still crappy, but at least it's an improvement. Keep in mind these are raw times... each cone is a two second penalty.

I just noticed that the #34 Toyota MR2 (same drivetrain layout as our Fieros) was consistently very quick.

Posted By: Patrick
Date Posted: 15 July 2013 at 6:46pm

Of course, no sooner than I do the above photoshop on the timing sheet, then Gary Watson posts a proper spreadsheet. I've altered it a bit for our purposes...

I notice that one of the two toppled cones is missing on Colby's last run, but I won't tell anybody.

You know, considering that there were 43 drivers, I think the four of us did very well in the standings... especially Gary with his 914/6.

Amazingly, that's nothing more than my iPhone 3GS. Although I am
amazed the mini map actually turned out accurate (the only accurate
one of the day), they're usually pretty awful with the 1 Hz internal gps.

Closed roofs may not be great for head room, but sure cut down on
wind noise

I agree, Harrison's video came out pretty good.

Next time I'm going to try recording audio with my phone instead of data. At the very least there will be less wind noise.

Also, Harrison if you want to give my old tires a try, you can. They look small and silly, but they may surprise you. I'm sure they have a couple autocrosses left in them.

Colby, do you mean you're going to record just the audio with your phone (while your camera records the video)? If so, the absolute best place to record audio on the track is from the area of your rear license plate. I'm not kidding!

When I was messing about with several of those thumb-sized cameras (geez, that was three years ago!), the audio recorded by the camera mounted by the rear license plate sounded awesome. It picked up the roar of the engine/exhaust, and of the tires squealing... and... NO wind noise!

[EDIT] Here's a blast from the past to demonstrate the quality of audio recorded from the rear license plate area. (There's one digital audio glitch almost half-way through that sounds like a backfire, and there's a digital video glitch almost at the end where the fella putting the cone back in the stop box sort of "freezes" for a split second. Not bad quality though considering those dinky little cameras only cost me five bucks apiece on eBay.)
