As we discussed at the meeting I'm thinking of getting big brakes and a suspension upgrades done for my Fiero - Ferrari rebody.  I want to be able to drive the car year round i.e. keep it low in summer and then lift it slightly in winter with winter rims and tires.  I've been thinking of either going with coil over shocks or Air Ride adjustable.  I have included 2 links.  I would appreciate any advice, recommendations from the club

hey there! I'm new on this forum, but am also looking at big brake and suspension upgrades for my 87 GT, checked out the held stuff and it looks ok, but I think i'm going with this setup:

http://www.kitcarpartsandaccessories.com/html/ind_parts/deluxe_suspension_brake/index.cfm - http://www.kitcarpartsandaccessories.com/html/ind_parts/delu xe_suspension_brake/index.cfm

You can buy it standard track width or +2" front and +3" rear wide track versions, they have optional air ride suspension and a quick lift/lower setup too.. They've re-engineered the whole suspension geometry with every part replaced from the cradle out.. Best part is it's a Canadian company from SK, downside for this terrific package is it's pricey... In my opinion the best way to go especially for a kit car like yours.

Regards, Jay

So Hugh, I heard through the grapevine that your car is going to be one of the most modded cars not only in the club but I think in the lower mainland.  I can't wait to see the finished project.

Have you decided yet....

Coil over or air ride?

I'll be dropping the car off on Saturday with Chris Zander at B&N Hotrods.  The plan is it replace the existing v6 and 4 speed transmission (any buyers?) with the zz383 crate engine (rated at 425hp) and and a 6 speed transmission.  We decided it would be too complicated to do the air ride suspension so we are going to go with the coil over shocks and big brake package.

When I started my midlife crisis I wanted a kick ass sportscar that was different.  When this project is completed the idea is to have a car with italian good looks, north american reliability and be able to run with anything else on the road.  I plan to take photos as the project progresses and post them.  This should be a lot of fun

This is too EXCITING.....can hardly wait !

Added note: I'm Italian, good looks, but no go (that's me, not the car)!

I just did some quick research on the Fiero 1/4 mile database.

The closest setup I can find that matches yours, is a 383 5spd combo, running the 1/4 mile in 11.59 at 116mph.    To put that into perspective.

You will go from a dead stop to 186kph in 11.59 seconds.

According to Dragtimes.com  a 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 runs it in 11.61.  You are not going to find many 2008 Vipers around here, so any older one, IE the more common ones 97-2000 you will eat alive and leave the drivers sitting there crying at the curb.

Here is the drag times link for the 2008 Viper.  http://www.dragtimes.com/Dodge-Viper-Timeslip-13192.html - http://www.dragtimes.com/Dodge-Viper-Timeslip-13192.html

Dave, that's really fast, Hugh will have the fastest FIERO HERE...
(and our solar system, hehe)!

Just curious, how does Hugh's swap compare to your 4.9 and Jon Bos's V8?
I'm also planing going to a V8 next, not sure what to choose...
(I guess it depends, how much you want to spend) ?

Well the 4.9 albeit quick, is the slowest of the 3 choices.   A comparably setup 4.9 5spd should run a 13.8 in the quarter.  John Boses should run a low 13 to a high 12.  It takes some pretty exotic combinations to get into low 12's or 11's.

Also note that 2 engines depending on how they are setup can have drastically different performance.   If you are looking for a simple cost effective fun quick car, the 4.9 swap can't be beat.  However if you are looking for a lot of mods down the road and almost unlimited upgradabilty in a V8 look at the Chevy Small Blocks.  Like what Hugh is getting done, or what V8 Archie can do.  Although I am not a fan of V6's the Supercharged 3800 is a great option as well.

Just because I looked up some 1/4 mile times on the internet.  The time for the Ferrari 308 GTSi my car is based on was 15.4 sec   http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z9827/default.aspx - http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z9827/default.aspx .  The time for a stock Corvette Z06 was 11.7sec at 126mph http://www.dragtimes.com/Chevrolet-Corvette-Timeslip-4870.html - http://www.dragtimes.com/Chevrolet-Corvette-Timeslip-4870.ht ml   for the stock Viper SRT10 the time was 12.5 sec at 117mph http://www.dragtimes.com/Dodge-Viper-Timeslip-6764.html - http://www.dragtimes.com/Dodge-Viper-Timeslip-6764.html
