Subject: Fiero - Ferrari 308 Rebody build
Date Posted: 15 December 2007 at 5:49pm

I have always loved the appearance of the Ferrari 308 (made popular on the TV show Magnum PI) and even though the real thing can be purchased for $30,000 or so it is still a 20 year old car, is very unreliable, very expensive to maintain and with an output of 240hp or so can be beaten off the line nowadays by a lot of family sedans!

Originally the plan was to build a kit car from scratch with Ferrari good looks but 2007 Corvette reliability and performance. While looking for a Fiero to build the kit on I found a completed car here in the lower mainland. It was a 1986 Fiero 2M6 that has been rebodied to look like a 1985 Ferrari 308 GTSi. I knew the car had a lot of problems right away but really I was just buying the kit.  I purchased it in June of 2007 for $10500.

The first order of business was to upgrade the mechanicals.  After discussing things with Chris Zander who is now working at B&N hotrods http://bnhotrod.homestead.com/ - http://bnhotrod.homestead.com/  We decided to do the following

GM zz383 crate motor   http://www.gmhorsepower.com/ZZ_383.html - http://www.gmhorsepower.com/ZZ_383.html

6 speed transmission kit w/tranny

Battery tray

Getrag modified cable

4 speed shifter assy

Getrag cable

Distributor

Fuel pump

Brakes and Suspension

Front:

Sport front suspension

Shocks Hal adjustable

1" swaybar

Spanner wrench

13" Willwood Brake kit

http://www.pfyc.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=VT4022&Category_Code=C6SUSP&Affiliate=froogle - http://www.pfyc.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product _Code=VT4022&Category_Code=C6SUSP&Affiliate=froogle

Rear:

Koni coilover kit

Bump steer correction

1 ¼" rear swaybar

So I dropped the car off December 2007

So here is the work done as of December 14th 2007

Dash and center console removed

Empty engine bay

Painting and prepping the engine bay and all these really cool toys ready to be installed

New battery and tray installed in the front compartment

That is pretty much it for now.  Chris tells me he is still waiting for some more parts to be delivered from V8 Archie and we are discussing what to do with the interior.  Happy Christmas to everyone and I'll update the thread as things progress

This car is going to be nearly insain.  Oh I can't wait to see, hear and be a passanger in the car for a boot.  I have ridden in 3800SC cars, 5.7 TPI V8 cars Ecotec swap cars, however this one is going to make all those cars look really slow.   I would start budgeting now for speeding tickets. LOL :)

Just to fix one typo Hugh your car is a 1986 not 1996 there is also solid cradle mounts in the car now and the engine bay insulation form west coast fiero and the tpi fuel injection unit that is a chorme unit from S&P (street and performance)

Sorry guys not much going on because of the holidays and all.  I will be meeting (hopefully) with Michelle at B&N Hotrods to go over the plans for the interior.  We will be installing the euro dash, center console and door panels from PISA   http://pisafierohq.com/interiors/fiero_3-08/ - http://pisafierohq.com/interiors/fiero_3-08/  and probably use a Tan and Black colour scheme.  The gauges are a bit of a problem right now I am looking at these Teleflex premier white gauges from http://www.haneline.com/ - http://www.haneline.com/ I am not sure I am delighted with them.  first I want the Speedo to be in km/hr with mph on the interior ring.  If any one has any other gauges with a bit more "punch" let me know.  More photos as things progress

Hopefully all the rest of the parts to finish the engine swap will show up this week and then the suspension and brake components will be showing up

I think you may have misunderstood the post.

Chris is building the car at B and N Customs, for Hugh.  I don't think Hugh has any plans of EVER selling the car.   Chris is just so happy with the car, he does not want to let it go after he is done building it.   (I would be the same way, 6spd 383sbc, drool, 425hp) , I think Hugh should take the car to a race track to learn how the car responds.

Hugh I am kinda serious about that idea though, you might want to look into some "Track Days" so that you can go out with a professional driver to learn the car before you start using it as your daily driver.    The relative short wheelbase and extreme torque that this motor is going to make, will the car much more exciting to drive.

Forget the interior pics, I want to see more of the engine.

Have you fired it yet.
Chris you have a decent Digi Cam right, when you do fire it, you have to get a video clip WITH sound. Oh I want to hear this bad boy fire up. I can almost smell the tire smoke already.

Having driven my V8 Fiero and I know how much fun it can be, I can't wait to see this car go down the track at Mission.   That big rear sway bar is really going to help keep the back stable.

Hugh you are going to have one of the most fun cars in the lower mainland. You are also going to have to take it to a Dyno to have them set the tune for you.

Hmm any room left in the budget for a set of M/T's for the back end. Hell if you go with 14" M/T's I would even donate a set of 14" Aluminum Rims.

I went to see the car on Friday.  It is at the muffler shop.  I was hoping they would be ready to fire it up but  they want to wait until all of the guages are hooked up.  Excuse my ignorance but what are 14" M/T's?

Posted By: Fire451
Date Posted: 02 March 2008 at 9:28pm
unfortunatly this car will never be able to put 14" wheels on it, the minimum size that will fit is a 17" due to the enourmous brakes on it

Posted By: Capt Fiero
Date Posted: 02 March 2008 at 9:45pm
M/T are Micky Thompson Drag Tires. The reason I said 14" is that the 14" Fiero wheels are the lightest wheels ever made for a Fiero and are as light as many race wheels. Lighter wheels equals faster speeds in a race.

Here we go a new update on the build.  An attempt was made to start the car but a vacuum problem was noted with the intake manifold.  It is being sent back to the suppliers (probably a 2 week turnaround.  The interior is coming along nicely.

Upholstered dash and guages installed

Hopefully I did not get it too greasy. I got the pleasure of driving Hugh's car today, and Huge it was defiantly a pleasure to take it for a spin. Makes me want my V8 back on the road.

I don't know what the technical name for the shock is, but Hugh needs a shock that will compress much easier than what he has now however will not de-compress really quickly. His suspension is VERY Firm however on hard launches the front end climbs over 2". Its kinda neat to see it haunch down, and look like its going to yard up the front wheels, but no exactly what Hugh is looking for.

His suspension is VERY custom, so he is going to need a tuner shop to do any work for him. I would think some of the auto cross guys would have a recommendation for him. Brian would you mind asking on your Auto cross forums and report back here. Please.

The 6spd is from V8 Archie, it is from the Pontiac G6 the trans is an F40 6spd from GM.   The trans is actully cheap about $500 however the kit to install it is expensive.   I think the complete Fiero Conversion kit is around $2400.  Just go to http://www.v8archie.com - http://www.v8archie.com

Hugh;

You mentioned in your reply to my build thread you went from a G6 6 spd to an auto with your turbo build.

What did you do with your G6 6 spd?  How hard would it be to fit that to the back end of my 3400 DOHC do you think?

I went over to Pennock's a couple days ago and had a look through the multitude of threads on it but they all seemed to go for 3800 S/C or V8 swaps.  I think a 6 spd behind a high revving DOHC would be outstanding.

Thanks
Don
