So after my purple fiero got written off i found a beautiful 86 fiero in winnipeg for $3000, i looked at the add and there was alot of work done on it like an all new steering rack ect ect. So i thought to myself sweet a deal! so i hopped on a plane and went to go buy it, when i got there it looked and drove great! so i paided for it and started to drive it home, he said it would have no problem getting to alberta.

So i drove it from winnipeg to brandon and it was kind of late so i stopped over at brandon and stayed in the comfort inn off the high way. when i woke up my car was broken into and the steering colum was broken and my car was felt in the on postion and it wouldnt start. it was saturday so the only place open was canadian tire x.x so i took it in and they did a little work on it and re charged up the battery and showed me how to start it with a screw driver. so i tryed to drive it home i was about 30 mins down the high way when i heard a loud pop like a flat tire, i pulled over and then my car stalled and wouldnt start agian x.x so i got a tow back to brandon.

Canadian tire was now closed as it would be for sunday so i stayed in a hotel and rented a uhal to take my car home in, the next day i loaded up my car on a uhal and headed home.

i just got my car in the shop and this is whats wrong with it
flex plate
fly wheel
ball joints
steering colum
wires
exhaust
more to the point i spent 3000 on my car 2000 on tows and getting it
home now its gonna be four grand to get it in alberta road worthy condiction, should i have just bought a new fiero i only got the steering colum fixed. i could just leave it in my back yard and get a new one for $4000? or should i fix mine?

Wow, thats a string of bad luck. You learned the first rule of car buying- If you buy a car out of town, bring a trailer to get it home.

As for the needed repair, I assume that $4,000 is shop prices. If you are willing to take your time and learn to work on the car yourself you can do the repairs for a 1/4 of the cost.

If you don't wish to do the work yourself than you will be at the mercy off mechanics for the rest of your life or  only drive cars that have a warranty. I was screwed over by a shop 25 years ago and was forced to make this choice.

That being said, Fieros has the best support group out of any car and the club can be an excellent resource for people that wish to learn how to repair them. Even if you only do the easy jobs. I know that I have learned a lot from the club.

And there's another point hidden right there....   Join a local club!!!!

But yeah, don't (!!!) drop another 4K into something you're into for (5?) already.  Dead waste.

Heck, fly out here and I'll sell you one of my cars before you do that!

BTW - you listed flywheel and flexplate.  Which one?  One is for an auto, the other a standard.  The rest...  you're talking about maybe $500 in parts.  Where does 4K come from?

well the 4 k come from the flex plate and fly wheel is for an auto and they have to dropp the tranny to fix it and with costs they said it would be about 1000 then they said i need new ball joints and they quoted me about another 1000 then i need to get it to pass the alberta inspection and its very anal.....theres like a huge list of things it needs pass so they looked it over and the 1000 comes into little things such has my wiring and exhaust ect ect.... the closest local club for me in calgary  and i just got it towed into day and tow trucker driver was pushing it in (on the spoiler) and it broke  now i have that to fix as well....

Yeah, it's been smacked there it looks like.

I hate to say it, but...   You got burned on this car.  :(

BTW, a set of ball joints is $125 (well, from my stock anyhow).  Install around here would be a couple hundred, maybe a bit more with an alignment.  Maybe it's time to visit a new repair shop?

The grand to do the tranny is WAY out to lunch.  $500 would get you a clutch done down here, so....

Shoulda bought my 86 GT...   :)

I would try a couple of different shops and talk to the Calgary Fiero guys.  Tony should be able to shoot you some suggestions as to which shops know Fiero's and which shops to avoid.  I try to avoid all the chain shops.

I strongly recommend checking around with local car clubs, esp. Calgary Fieros, and finding a private shop that has a very good reputation. I don't even trust most places with an oil change.

We've got a dude from Lethbridge posting on our (primarily) GVRD and Victoria board, so you never know what areas people in a group will be familiar with :D
