Ok so I know nothing about fibreglassing or paint. The closest I come to painting is Paint by Krylon in a rattle can. I need to learn the basics of this.
The closest I have came to sanding one time, I thought hey, 80grit seems like a nice starting point. Hmm not a good idea when I found that I could not get the deep scratches out. (thankfully this was not on my current car) Its funny because I actually did try this once on a fiberglass part.
My current cowl hood on the 85GT is mounted via self taping 1/4 bolts drilled right into the fiberglass. (it was originally mounted on a metal hood with rivets.) I want to fill in the seem where the cowl meets the hood, and then sand it down, I guess I have 2 choices, leave the bolts in place as re-enforcement and glass over them, or remove them and put some sort of filler in the holes and then sand it. The cowl is made of thin fibreglass. I have a few body panels I want to swap on as well. Just stock replacements for any damaged or really rough shape parts. (new stock Aero nose, new stock side rocker panels, maybe a new rear bumper skin.) Anyone know if an 86GT rear bumper skin will physically fit on an 85GT. I really like how they relocated the GT emblem into the side of the rear bumper and dropped the Pontiac from the skin.
When I put on the Cowl hood, at first it kinda scared me. However after seeing it on there it has really kinda grown on me. It went on to serve a couple purposes. Massive hood opening, to allow hot air from the rad and under-hood pressure to escape at high speeds. Which it does really well. As for looks, it looks kinda rough, kinda cool, kinda weird, but in the end, its just plain mean looking. So it is staying.
The car will be staying with the sorta Rat Rod theme it has going on. Old school 16" 3 spoke wheels, side exit exhaust, kinda rough around the edges.
If you read this far, Thank You.
I guess what I kinda neat to know, is what is a good filler/bonding material, and if I have to mix or make it myself. What ingredients do I need for the soup. Can I just do a rough sand on the places I want to use the filler stuff, then putty it on, or do I lay a small sheet of fibre glass and then put resin on it and squish it where I want it? Like I said initially. I really don't know a thing about fibreglass. (have seen it used, but never done it.)
