Well for suspension checks I would go to Dale's alignment in Langley they are just off the Bypass, and ask for Daryl.  Daryl has done many Fiero's for Lisa and I as well as Dr. Fiero's customer cars and club members cars.

    As for the engine checks, no one really comes to mind as a good engine expert.   However if I were looking for a shop to really get in depth with a motor I would try to find a tuner shop or other custom shop.  Get ICBC to foot the bill for a compression test, leak down test and anything else the shop can come up with.  They should be able to take a scope to the engine and listen for any weird noises that could be a sign of a problem down the road.

If they fried the tires off - I'll bet you they took the clutch with it.  That'll be a toughie to prove though.  They could have taken it from a 75K km's left clutch to a 5K km's left clutch (ie, it's still alive now, but could be dead tomorrow instead of years from now).

If a place was really motivated, they could measure the compressed disc thickness by pulling the starter and going at it from the side...

Have the oil drained, and strained through a coffee filter (or some other such principal) to look for particulate matter.  If a bearing is now on the way out, that MIGHT show it up.  Have the oil filter analyzed too..

Ding ding ding! We have a winner! A1 just called me up to say that they fixed the column, but that I don't have a clutch. It's been approved to go over to a trans shop beside them and I'll be hearing whatever about it by tomorrow I hope.

If it's been driven without the clutch, I'm concerned there could be gear damage.


At this point I'm hoping that if ICBC keeps approving small amounts of work and getting it done and paying for it, that they'll never be able to justify totalling the car.

Well ICBC probably has a value on your car of about $6000 which usually means they will spend $3000-$4000 into repairs before they will write the car off.   My 85GT had a value of 5000 and they cut me a cheque for $3000 for repairs.  I chose to get the repairs done myself rather than letting them do it.

When my Fiero was rear-ended a few years back and the adjuster was doing the estimate, ICBC's flag came up at $2700 (costs of repairs) and they overroad it.   The adjuster (and a GM regional manager happened to be there at the time) told me that if your Fiero was in good condition they have authorization to go over $5000 in repairs.  That was a couple of years ago so this might be policy for Fieros.

That's a relief, thanks for the info.

Apparently the clutch booster leaked all the fluid, so they're replacing the M. & S. cylinders to get it operational and then checking for further problems. The bodyshop (A1 Autobody over on 200th and #10, they seem really cool so far) rolled it into Bert's Automotive Transmissions for the clutch stuff. With any luck, the parts will arrive there tomorrow and I'll find out if the car was driven around much without a clutch.

I picked up my Fiero from A1 today... briefly. It seems they got a faulty wiper switch from their parts supplier (Langley Discount). Other than that the new column felt nice.

I'm looking forward to getting it back, having a few more inspections done and getting started on my personal projects again. First up will be new tires (the rears courtesy of ICBC if there's any justice), headlight motor rebuilds and side window restoration (motors, wipes, guides, and windows). Perhaps a battery relocation and some wiring upgrades, maybe heated seats, and I will be very ready for the next year.

Nothing big new. Alignment/ brake, tire and suspension inspection on Monday. Wiper switch is a big headache, I'm getting a single wipe on engine start now. Noticed some body work in the lower molding that needs to be taken care of, so I'll get them to pull out the switch and work on it again when I bring it back in for that.

Not always, but frequently, the wiper flip on startup is the wiper motor unit itself.

It's fixable in theory, but unless you've got a bit of spare time on your hands, you're broke, etc etc...  it's better to just replace it (keep the old one unless they demand it back as a core!).

Well, it was fine until they changed out my steering column and put a new switch in. Then I started getting a wipe on ignition. They switched it out, and it wasn't doing it but it suddenly started wiping and could not be stopped (although all the delay positions still worked, just the "off" position was equivalent to "low"). So they swapped in a third piece, which wipes on ignition 3 out of 4 to 4 out of 5 times. I think somewhere in there they tried swapping out the motor.

They're an ICBC approved shop, so their work is guaranteed... I just hope they aren't having to suck up all the time they're spending on it themselves.

Just got the alignment/inspection done. Dale's said everything is looking good down there (other than the tires) and straightened it all out. Huuuge improvement in how it's driving. Just need to put new tires on now.

I also drove past A1, showed the remaining damage to the dude there. He took some pictures and will be running it past my inspector and then getting back to me once he has the parts. And then I'm done! I can't wait.

i bought my car from winnipeg, i was driving it back and i deicided to stop over night in brandon man, two hours away and i stayed in teh comfort inn off the highway for the night, when i woke up my new car that i owned for a total of 15 hours was broken into and they broke the steering col... trying to steal it but they just drained my battery. i bought a uhal and took it home the rest of the way. i kind of know how you feel.
