Topic: CNN Money declares Fiero’s collectable Posted: 19 February 2010 at 8:16am |
Taken from here, http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2010/autos/1002/gallery.cheap _collector_cars/index.html
To get started on the cheap, Hagerty Insurance, which specializes in covering collectible cars, recommends these ten models. The values given here are for cars in average condition.
Current Value: $5,000
The mid-engined, two-seat Fiero was a great idea that was poorly executed, at first. Early model-year Fieros were performance disappointments, but these later models, with V6 engines and 5-speed manual transmissions, better lived up to the sporty design
The last model year, with handling enhancements added by Lotus, was the best, said Hagerty.

It's amazing how long incorrect information hangs around!
[EDIT] Damn, John beat me to it by a millisecond.

I looked over the other cars in this list. I'm not so impressed now that the Fiero is mentioned, as the AMC Pacer is also listed!

Hey man, grab a pacer, dye it baby blue and put a flame job on it, and voila, Wayne's World replica car.
And what's the misinformation? That Lotus helped with the suspension?

Yep, the only thing GM spoke to Lotus about was painting the body panels. The suspension was an all GM designe. It was just that it was so good, everyone assumes its a Lotus designed system.

Oh, ok. Because in the Lotus forums even they believe it to be a Lotus suspension set-up as well.
Interesting, I will catalogue that and find interesting ways to bring it up during normal conversations with non-car people.

In a word everything. Better brakes, Better steering, improved front suspension, completely re-designed rear suspension. There is now a factory 4 link style system in the rear. (no control arms or ball joints in the rear not even a single grease joint, also no toe link rod.)
Also the brakes were changed to a full vented rotor system.
Major drawback. Parts are really hard to find and in some cases do no exist. Point in case, 88 Rack and Pinions are not available, if you have one go bad you are pretty much screwed until you can find a used one on ebay or a wrecking yard.
