    Posted: 04 April 2007 at 8:24pm

Hi all,

Cracker some time ago replaced the upper pin on my drivers door, now I have to replace the bottom one which I have, but it seems to be really tight to get to...suggestions please?

Thanks

2 short jack stands or jacks under the door while it open and a 2nd person to balance the door.  You can reach in and loosen, but do not remove the hinge bolts.  It will make the job much easier.  Your goal is to get the door floating on the jacks, rather than being supported by the hinges.

This sounds like a good subject for a tech day. My 2m4 needs drivers side pins and I would like to see how it's done.

What is the pin and bushing kit needed?

I picked up 4 long GM pins from lordco for $27. They had lots in stock (ya in stock). I'm going to install them on my 87 while the doors are off the car.

I finished the pin replacement on my 87se. all I can say is doing the lower pins suck. That little spring bites but I must say the doors swing much better now.

When you get the long pin set cut 1/4 of the end of the pin and round off the end. This will keep the pin from hitting the door skin fastener.

You did get new bushings right.  The brass round bushing things that need to be tapped in with a hammer.

Yes I did. That was the easy part. The springs are the only hard part when you have the doors on a bench. I think I am going to make a spring compressor out of vice grip pliers for next time .

If I can get in touch with Craker before the tech day, he has a door spring compressor tool that we used when we did the door pin tech day at his place years ago.   Maybe he can post a pic of it, or I can just pick it up from him and bring it to the tech day.  At least you will be able to see the design of the pre-fab one to make one of your own.
