    Posted: 15 April 2009 at 11:36am
Just thought I would bring this up information and discussion purposes.

I'm wondering if this run should be bumped one day to Sunday, May 3.

I just checked the Hells Gate website and it says.

May 3
Sunday
Canyon Appreciation Day - Tram rides are FREE all day long !! Entertainment and fun for the whole family! Seasons Passes available for CAD guests - $5.00pp.

Open 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on this day!

The last time I went to one of these "Free" days, I also bought a season pass that allowed me to bring up to 10 guests for free each time I visited.  Great for those who have guests visiting from out of town.

If it was completely up to me, I would say yes bump it, it would be a good idea, save every couple like 20 bucks.  I imagine they will have lots more stuff as they are expecting lots of people because of the freebie.   We will probably want to bump the start time up a bit for the event to make sure we all get back here early enough to wind down and get to sleep for Monday work day.

I agree with bumping to Sunday and an earlier start.

I will be going to Hells Gate on Sunday (May 3rd), but not in my Fiero.  I will be taking my family with me.   I won't leave the Vancouver area until around lunchtime though, so hope to see the Fieros there.

Ok  everyone that is coming should be aware of the start position.

Starbucks at 84th Ave and 200th Street in Langley 8am.

I went looking for an actual address for Hells Gate and for whatever reason, Microsoft Streets and Trips did not recognize 43111 Trans Canada Hwy in Boston bar as a legit address.   So I entered it in long hand via the coordinates.   It comes up as the China Bar Tunnel.

Says its roughly 174kms each way.   That's starting from my home address, so I'd bet its only 320kms round trip from Langley.   If we fill up in Abby we should have no problem getting all the way up there and all the way back without having to refuel.    However if anyone is at less than half a tank, we'll stop and grab fuel in Hope on the way back.    Going from the Canyon down to Hope is almost all downhill so you don't use hardly any fuel at all.

This should be a great run, please remember to grab cameras, chargers and camera mounts if you got em.

Driving Directions From Vancouver...

  • Travel east on Trans Canada #1 to Exit 170 at Hope (watch for the Hells Gate Airtram billboard)
  • Continue following Trans Canada #1 to Kamlooops traveling northeast up the Fraser Canyon through Yale and Spuzzum. We are 10 minutes northeast of Spuzzum. Just look for the bright red building!

Note the section between Hope and Boston Bar, that is where all the fun is going to be had, there is not 1km of that road that is straight, and the area between Hells Gate and Boston bar is one hell of an elevation climb through some of the best roads around.

I was there...but went later in the afternoon.   I did spot the group. Looks like 6 of you went?    I tried to get pix of you coming back, but you were
all separated and I'm still learning to work with the shutter delays of digital cameras.   So sorry, David, the picture that I took of your yellow 88
turned out to be the pick-up truck behind you.

Here are the two I got that looked like Fieros.....

Ok here is the link to the main gallery of pics.  There are almost no pics of the cars together, so I hope Tristan, Austin and Tim  got lots of pics.    http://captfiero.com/HellsGate2009/

There are 136 pics in the gallery.   I did get video but it was 90% side streets around Boston Bar.  Few quick clips as we drove around the group.   Video is here, http://captfiero.com/videos/club_runs/bostonbar.wmv   Its 100mb at 640x480 only about 10 seconds of Fieros though.

Ok now back to posting.

Hey Ken no problem on missing my car.   The return run got kinda divided up, Tim said he wanted to do some shopping and looking around, Lisa and I wanted to make a couple special side trips around Boston Bar.  (never really clued in on it, but my Dad asked me to snap a few pics of some specific areas, turned out I lived in Boston Bar when I was 1-2 years old)

Tristan in his 86GT, Austin in his 86GT and Austins friend took off and headed down the mountain ahead.  As much fun as it was hot dogging with the group, it was kind nice to cruise along and see the sites with the wife, granted she did dozed off a couple times. (I better duck now, as something is going to get thrown at me when she reads this)

It was a rather small group, as a lot of the regulars had things that came up and were not able to attend.   With Arlington just around the corner I hope everyone gets there cars out and dusted off.   This was a great shakedown run.   I don't think we had a single mechanical issue on the entire drive.

I don't know if you caught my post on the email list, but ya the crowd at the Tram was HUGE as we drove by on our way out.   When we got there 1st thing in the morning, we had our choice of parking and darn near walked right into the tram.  There was no wait at all, only wait was for them to get the tram door open for us.     I do have to say thank you for the heads up on the free day, I was amazed to see the price has gone up again, $17 per adult now to go on a regular day.

For the 1st time since we have been doing this run, I actually walked all the way across the bridge and up the trail a bit.  Kinda neat.   I'll post whatever pics I can.  Crap that reminds me, BRB

(heading to the top of the post)

Ok pics and video link is posted.    Now where was I, .......

Oh ya, bridge thing, we walked across it, darn near froze ourselves, I can't believe how out of shape I am, we got about 100ft up the hill, I said to hell with this, sat down on a rock, light up a smoke and relaxed with the view.  Yes I do see the irony of that.   We got some ice cream, ya whats goes best if you are freezing, Ice Cream..........

So we got done our munchies took some more pics and raced up to a place called Alpine Village Restaurant, got some grub and then got on our own ways back down the mountain.

Ok now that I have babbled for the better part of 10 Min's, I'll try to pick out some of the better pics and head to bed.    Talk to ya all at the meeting.

I hate it when people post pictures at a location where you have to be a "member" to see them.

Then here's a great (free) utility for you...

IrfanView will do batch re-sizing and re-compression of numerous images.

Try it, you'll like it.
