Hi all,

Well, time for an oil change in both cars soon and wondered what everyone uses in their cars.  I will be going a full synthetic and hear Mobile 1 is good...CT has the 4.4 lt on sale for $39...

If anyone knows of any sales at Lordco or NAPA, please advise.

Oh, and does anyone use an oil treatment like LUCUS?.

Cheers

I'm using Castrol Syntech (full synthetic) in my Fiero.   Also in my MINI.  BMW/MINI oil is also Castrol full synthetic.

However, I've heard good things about Mobil 1 also.

How about Redline or Amsoil anyone and their 12,000+KM oil change?.  My concern is oil that would sit in my car over the winter, but this would mean an oil change every few years if that...lol...maybe for my daily driver I guess.

I read that BMW likes to use Redline also Ken...thanks all

Any additives like Lucus?

Synthetic has many good things going for it - one of which is it doesn't tend told hold 'crap' in suspension.  So if you DO end up parking it for extended periods this is good!  It's not wanting to hold particles, and acid against the bearings (which is about the worst thing that can happen in these engines).

You CAN go extended (8-10K km's) between oil changes since the oil doesn't break down like conventional - but I'd still like to see a filter change and a top up every 4K or so (sort of a half way mark kind of thing) since the particles are still getting picked up and deposited in the filter (a Delco PF52C of course!).

Unless you have a specific problem, I'm still really hesitant to use MOST oil treatments.  No particular reason (haven't had a failure BECAUSE of one for example).

As for brands?  Believe it or not....  Tech 2000 from WaldoMart is far and away the best value in synthetic (and conventional!).  I mean, let's face it - there isn't a "walmart" refinery staffed by 12 year old underpaid refugeees somewhere in India churning this stuff out!  It's being produced by one of the big makers and just being rebranded.

Someone on Pennocks years ago SAID that he was a purchaser for Waldomart and saw that it was made by the Mobil1 guys.  Who knows if that applies to Canada (he was in the states).

Thanks Cracker...I was just looking up the oil filter part number also:).  So the Tech2000 at Walmart would still be cheaper than Mobile1 with our discount at Lordco?...I'll find out.

Thanks

Every time I've checked on other lubricants, it makes no difference - looks like the margin on them is very low, so our 'discount' really doesn't come into play.

But it might be worthwhile checking anyhow...

If you are thinking of going exotic high price oil, nothing and I mean nothing beats Royal Purple motor oil.   I will have to find the online tests done on it.  They took all the major oils and even some that were twice the price of Royal Purple and found that the Royal was the best out of the bunch.   I think it is about 60 bucks for 4 liters of Royal Purple.  (other even more exotics are are around $150 in there tests)

Well, since our cars are not exotic...in our minds they are:)...the Tech2000 at $23 for 4 lt and the reviews I read...I am sold, just came back from Walmart.

Now the no-mind that did my oil change wrenched on the oil filter so hard, I actually have to go and buy a oil filter wrench since I have nothing large enough to do the job...F%#^*'s...lol

Be nice if a few were available in Canada and at a resonable price...well guess it's cheaper than the $80 a oil change I used to pay:)

Royal Purple can be bought at any Speed Shop, Mopac and I think even Lordco is now carrying it.     Where in the world were you paying 80 bucks for an oil change, just so I can know not to go there.

Any of the lube shops would charge for a full synthetic oil plus the PF52 filter (extra $5)...with a 10% discount, then tax, just under $85.  A Semi-Synthetic (Lordco) was just under $60.

So buying a jack, stands, etc., will be paid off in 3-5 changes especially the Tech2000 at $23 for a 4.4lt.

I read that article and if I ran the oil to the 8-12,000km as they say you can, I can see the Royal Purple, Redline or Amsoil is worth it...but I prefer to change every 3-4000km with the filter...oil should always be nice a fresh and great for the engine.

I believe Redline and Amsoil are considered "racing" oils.  Most of us "consumers" who drive our cars in a day to day spirited way on normal streets and roads probably don't need to get too exotic.   I believe for normal dino oil, the normal oil change intervals (by the manufacturer specs) is between 5000-7500 KMS.   I don't know when it changed, but it used to be 7500 MILES.   If using synthetic oil, it's usually from 7500 to 16,000kms.  I would use normal dino oil if I was driving my Fiero as a daily driver and change the oil at least every 6 months regardless of mileage.   If storing the car, then a decent full synthetic oil should be fine as the oil doesn't break down over time.   Just make sure you have a good oil filter on your car.   Based on various comparisons, I believe the Delco oil filters are considered very good as they seem to have most filter material (folds) in them over anything from Fram or Purolator or other major name brands.

Also, the shops that Mr. Lubes and other fast oil change places charge a premium for synthetic oil.  Something like $30 per change just because it's synthetic oil.  The price of synthetic oil in comparison to dino oil has come down dramatically.

A dealer oil change for my other car (the little Brit one) costs $80 so it's almost inline with what the fast oil change places cost.
