I just heard that every single current generation Camaro
got recalled. Apparently, that ignition switch that turns itself off and disables all the safety features, even while you are still driving happens to the Camaros. Interesting that when I had that 1999 Buick Century, I was driving along the Eastwest Connector (Richmond) when I noticed the engine just shut off. Good thing we were going straight at the time and in about 5 seconds the engine came back on and the car just kept rolling along. I did not have to use the brakes and there was no traffic in front or behind following too close. The issue goes much further back than the 2004 Cobalts. It only happened once so I never really brought it up as an issue with the dealer, who did everything they could to avoid fixing anything on my car under warranty. |

Nope. It's some contrived 'non issue' that GM has seemingly made up to try
and cover there butt's. They're claiming that people can hit the key fob with their knee, switching the car off. So they want to take away our 'switchblade' key, and replace it with a small headed key, and a dangly fob! F that. They can pry my fob out of my cold dead hand. A number (like hundreds!) of people on the forum went out and TRIED to shut off their car with their knee. Tall, short... I think ONE guy said he could do it after REALLY trying. There's a 19 page and growing thread on it, with an attached poll. %90 + are refusing to participate in the recall. Funny thing is though, that same large fob appears in MANY (!!!) other brands of cars and trucks. None of them are being recalled. Ever sat in one of those Mercedes/Dodge sprinter vans? Popular platform for an RV, so I drove several of them at Cummins. Now THOSE I'm pretty sure I can turn off with my knee from the seating position! Still no recall. |

I don't think it has anything to do with somebody bumping the key. I think
there is an issue with how the key contacts the microswitches in the key socket. Driving over a speed bump or an expansion joint on a bridge on highway would be enough to to cause the electrical contacts to disconnect. It was a bad design and should have been redesigned in the first place. |

GM Press Release:
DETROIT – General Motors will recall all current generation Chevrolet Camaros because a driver’s knee can bump the key FOB and cause the key to inadvertently move out of the “run” position, with a corresponding reduction or loss of power. The issue, which may primarily affect drivers sitting close to the steering column, was discovered by GM during internal testing following the ignition switch recall earlier this year. “Discovering and acting on this issue quickly is an example of the new norm for product safety at GM,” said Jeff Boyer, vice president of GM Global Safety. The Camaro ignition system meets all GM engineering specifications and is unrelated to the ignition system used in Chevrolet Cobalts and other small cars included in the ignition switch recall. |
